I had cause to use my Leica Passport. I had dropped my new Leica onto a very hard surface, within 30 minuets of purchase. It dented the top corner and prevented the flash from popping up. Although it still appeared to work. I took a few pictures they seemed ok, but not as sharp as I had hoped. I sent it back to Leica for repair,

Anyway, after a month it has finally been returned. According to the documentation, as well as replacing the top, and flash unit they also replaced the lens. The X1 is as good as new. I am impressed! I guess this goes some way to explaining the high price.

In the UK the X1 comes with one years accidental damage through the passport. I don't know how this applies in other countries.

I forgot to mention following the repair the two dials for speed and aperture adjustment on the top plate actually appear a bit firmer in operation, they now have a much more pronounced "click". Has Leica modified their design following much criticism from the many discussion boards?

Actually, I have what is presumably a recently produced x1 and was wondering why everyone complained so much about the dials..they lock in and work for third steps..clicking seems fine..my battery door, whilst not perfect, is not as bad as some photos I've seen...or maybe the photos are close ups so the accentuate the issue. Either way, neither is a deal breaker for me...I do live in a very hot desert (97f already today) and if there's still a skin peeling ailment, i think I'll see it.

Thanks for the info on passport...I don't think we get that here :/ can any us x1 owners clarify?

United Kingdom bought cameras only. Actually Leica Solms bills Leica UK for Passport repairs.

That entitles you to better treatment than everyone else, does it?

The Passport isn't for free. Someone, somewhere, is paying for it when they buy equipment in the UK.

Looks like someone missed all the smiley faces and LOL's on the post....A bit sensitive don't you think?

Notwithstanding the smileys, the implication as I read it was that people in the US deserve better treatment than anyone else.

Sorry if I have misconstrued what was being said there.

I hope someone here has the definitive answer on this "no fault" policy. Is it in selected countries only? Does it require a special purchase agreement (and price)?

Two nations seperated by a common language....as a native "american" speaker I read it as laced with sarcasm....I imagine it could translate in different ways.

Wow, you drop the camera and Leica pays for it...that's great.

Hell, the minute I get a bad shot, I'll just stomp on my X1 and get a new 1:D LOL!

maybe it will take better shots:p
