jaapv Posted May 28, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 28, 2010 Because there is a problem with Schott glass. One of the smelters has broken down and has been repaired only recently, creating a shortage of a number of optical glass types. B&W filters is affected as well. 3rdtrick Posted May 28, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 28, 2010 I am guessing it is because the focal length is "normal" for the M9 but was not popular on the M8. I bought mine to go with the M9. Pete

Blimey Jaap, some of the excuses you provide for Leica remind me of Basil Fawlty trying to explain why he can't come up with a Waldorf Salad.
Julian Thompson Posted May 28, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 28, 2010 I just got mine but it was about a ten month wait. Worth it though. Awesome lens.
chris_tribble Posted May 28, 2010 Share #7 Posted May 28, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) SO glad I got mine (mint / used) for a good price 3 months before the M9 came out. I use it more and more... Combined with the 28 cron asph + 90 cron apo, it's the absolute core of what I do with the M.
jaapv Posted May 28, 2010 Share #8 Posted May 28, 2010 Blimey Jaap, some of the excuses you provide for Leica remind me of Basil Fawlty trying to explain why he can't come up with a Waldorf Salad.I just got an E-mail from B&W, not Leica, explaining the situation. 486 and ND filters are affected as well. Normal service is expected to resume in the middle of June. A bit unwarranted, your post, I would say, although I am a big John Cleese fan. Confusing reasons with excuses and shooting the messenger. Begs the question, when did the smelter break down? Hasn't there been a shortage of that lens for months now?
jaapv Posted May 28, 2010 Share #10 Posted May 28, 2010 I really don't know. My post should be read fwiiw. I do recall complaining threads about a lack of 486 filters for quite a while.

Coincidentally, would you believe, the location where Fawlty Towers was filmed is a village over from the Schott Glas Factory srl. I may be wrong, but they have Waldorf Salad on the menu at the Factory.

swamiji Posted May 28, 2010 Share #13 Posted May 28, 2010 There is a rumor at my Leica dealer, that there will be a new version. Soon to be announced.
ho_co Posted May 28, 2010 Share #14 Posted May 28, 2010 ... a village over from the Schott Glas Factory srl.... Cornelius--What's "srl"? Jaap--Thanks for the heads-up. Now I understand why I can't get the filters I've been looking for. Remember when the Leitz Glaslabor was the reason for slow deliveries? "I'm sorry, but the glass lab is so small, they can only make one kind of glass at a time, so your order will have to wait for the next batch of that glass." So they switch solely to commercially available glass to avoid the snags. And one of their big supplier's smelters goes down. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. wilfredo Posted May 29, 2010 Share #19 Posted May 29, 2010 There is a rumor at my Leica dealer, that there will be a new version. Soon to be announced. What is the source of this rumor? Does this mean another price increase? The only places I found on the web that have this lens available right now for purchase brand new have inflated the price due to the shortage, one of these places is Amazon.com. I paid a deposit for one over a month ago. I don't have a 50mm M lens right now so I am getting a bit antsy. I'll be using mine on the M8, mostly for portraits.
