Convert PS from windoze to mac -- is this easy?

Recommended Posts

I did this a few years ago. The big issue will be whether you bought your PS from a recognised dealer or at least it was in my case. I hadn't and initially Adobe refused to move me across despite the fact I had bought at least 1 upgrade from them (via download) after the 'illicit' (in their eyes) deal with an unauthorised dealer.

After much shouting they relented. The migration process is simple enough in other respects but you may have to migrate CS4 then upgrade. From memory I believe they only have a certain number of migration packs available and may as yet not have any for CS5.

They will ask you to fill a form in and destroy your old software copies upon receipt of the new ones. This is a one off swap and you can't swap back later though.

Thanks for the info. I figured it would be a little problematic. I'll send a question to the vendor to see if they can work this out for me. At least they will get the upgrade $.

I gotta do this because Neat Image, which I use, only works within PS on the Mac. I also use Silver FX Pro and Focus Magic and they work within PS, so at least I'll only be opening up one app when all this is done.

As painful as the conversion process is, the destination, the mbp, makes it worthwhile this time.

Hello from Watertown, Bill.

I did this last year. It's called a cross-platform transfer. I started the process on the phone with Adobe. I forget the sequence, but they mailed me out a complete version of CS4 for Mac. When it arrived, I had to de-activate my Windows version on my old PC and then I could install the Mac version and activate it. They told me that after making the switch I could not return to the Windows version (not that I would want to)

If you want to get the CS5 upgrade, they will probably do the same process, with the addition of charging you $199 for the upgrade.

Hope this is some help.

On reflection I think because Adobe send you a brand new CS licensed boxed copy they are twitchy about and old 'dodgy' versions, I use dodgy in their context. I bought a SH copy of PS and then upgraded to CS and again to CS2 - the latter via a non authorsed dealer - though how I was expected to have known that I don't know. I did pay full price. When I wanted to cross platform migrate to mac, all my problems started so you should be careful.

Bill,

You may find that Neat Image will only run in 32 bit mode CS5. This is the case with a lot of plug

in's, where the vendors have not got round to updating. This does degrade the performance a bit. I have decided to do without Noise Ninja for this reason until they update. They do a 64 bit version for windows, so I cannot understand why they won't bring the Mac version I have bought, up to date. I put that to them and got a somewhat sniffy answer.

I had a nightmare trying to update from CS3 extended to CS4 normal and had to get various extra codes from Adobe to do that.
