Well the answer is of course that it does - in situations where a hood will prevent flare etc - but Leica chose to design the camera much like any other P&S digicam and how many of those have lens hoods?

The advantage is the little ring which unscrews around the base of the lens, and there will no doubt be a 'filter thread' adaptor in due course which will allow the fitment of a lens hood, but that of course defeats the design principal of the motorised collapsing lens!

A hood would be an advantage but is difficult to execute as part of the camera design. A detachable one, if feasible, would be an irksome extra on a small compact camera. In extrimis I shield the lens with my free hand but it is not ideal. For all of my other cameras I always use a lens hood.

The lens does look fairly deep set so I imagine any problems would only occur in pretty severe conditions.A lens I use a lot is a pre-asph 35mm lux and the lens hood is a pain, the lugs that need to be pressed to remove it always seem to be where the tags on the aperture ring are and being a similar height cause some confusion.Recently Ive started to leave it off and up till now have not noticed any difference.

Have you experienced a lot of flair with your X1?

All Leica pictures have flair, naturally. :D

But flare is problem in bright light, and yes, a lenshood would be nice.
