Hank Taylor Posted May 17, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) At the Chino Air Show yesterday was able to take this shot using a 80-200 f4 with my R8 Every year they have an excellent display of War Birds. Here is an excellent restored Spitfire. If you would like to see more such as the P38 and the only Northrop flying wing I 'll be glads to put them together. Hank Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Hi Hank Taylor, Take a look here Spitfire. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Hank Taylor Posted May 17, 2010 Author Share #2 Posted May 17, 2010 What the heck, here are are few more shots taken at the Show, I thought the picture with the girls was interesting when you look at the men expressions in the background... By the way, this is the only Northrop flying wing in existence The Government made Northrop destroy the other experimental aircraft because they owen the plans I believe the award was given to General Dynamics which then built the B36 Bomber. Mr. Northrop was ahead of his time In his earlier days he was the design engineer on the structural integrity for the DC3. Which is still flying after 75 years. Welcome, dear visitor! wizardol Posted May 17, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 17, 2010 Jack Northrop was a remarkable aeronautical engineer. Besides creating the "Flying Wing," Jack previously worked for Donald Douglas where he did the structural engineering for the DC-3. In all the years the DC-3 has been (and still is) flying, there has never been a known airframe failure ! Jack also moonlighted (with Donald Douglas's permission) to help former Douglas engineer, Donald Hall (who was then working for T. Claude Ryan, in San Diego) lighten the Spirit of St. Louis (Lindberg's plane) to give it sufficient range (carry more fuel) to fly across the Atlantic. T. Claude Ryan told Jack's son, John, that his dad took 250 lbs. out of the wing. When Lindberg landed in Paris, he had around 100 lbs. of fuel left. Without Northrop's engineering skill, Lindberg would never have made it across the Atlantic! Stuart Symington , from Texas, wanted General Dynamics of Ft. Worth to get the contract for the B-36 Cold War atomic bomber aircraft (not Northrop in California). To take the Flying Wing out of contention, he forced Northop to destroy the larger, prototype flying wings (which were technically U.S. Government property). Needless to say, Northrop was heartbroken. However, shortly before Jack Northrop died, the B-2 (flying wing stealth bomber) contract was awarded to Northrop Corp. (now Northrop/Grumman). Mr. Northrop was given a security clearance so that he could be told that his flying wing design would fly again. Oliver Filippi
biglouis Posted May 17, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 17, 2010 Terrific pictures of the aircraft, sharp and colourful. Very well done. (And the ladies ain't bad either). Thanks for sharing because one rarely sees such aircraft in the air any longer. Louis
stuny Posted May 17, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 17, 2010 Hank - I agree with Big, and I'll be directing my nephew-in-law to the aircroft photos. Not the last photo, though, since he's married to my niece. Lovely shots all, and I do like the reactions of the men to the women.

likalar Posted May 17, 2010 Share #9 Posted May 17, 2010 Hank, I really enjoyed seeing these shots. I can't imagine the effort and expense taken to keep these airworthy. Beautiful, all around. Those girls are pretty funny, all dolled up up for the beach, checking their twitters, The guys are all looking, hoping not to get busted, but ready to explain: "Honey, I'm sure glad our kids don't dress like that". I agree, to tell you the truth they were out of place here at the Air Show, but that didn't stop the men form looking at them. I'm sorry I didn't any of their wife's expressions! biglouis Posted May 18, 2010 Share #20 Posted May 18, 2010 Another good grop and possibly the best of the lot, the new Spitfire picture. Amazing clarity and detail. Is that a Liberator (the bomber?). The two jets are also an incredible contrast and very evocative of the whole early jet/cold war era. A great collection and again my genuine thanks for sharing.
