Gerard Posted May 14, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) ...of the home page? The 'news' is not, er, new. With so much stuff going on in Leica land right now, why does this page never get updated? What's the point of a forum 'front end' if it is not utilised to feed information to its audience? Advertisement Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Hi Gerard, Take a look here What's the point... [ of the Forum Home Page ]. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
RockyIII Posted May 14, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 14, 2010 My link brings me directly to the forum, bypassing the Home page. I see what you mean, though. It is probably not a good idea to have a news item stating "Today . . . " linked to a post from November, 2009. Rocky
Gerard Posted May 14, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted May 14, 2010 It's a great forum that warrants a good, non-ugc, front end. I understand the desire for Leica for it to not look like a commercial entity, and can imagine the low cost base the site works on but, the home page should at least be updated once a week or, hell, once a month!? pop Posted May 14, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 14, 2010 I agree with the point you are making. However, forum authorities will probably not spot it in this part of the forum. I suggest you have the thread moved to the "about the forum" subforum.
aesop Posted May 14, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 14, 2010 <snip>...I understand the desire for Leica for it to not look like a commercial entity... ...sounds like I am missing a beat here, DarthVader - does Leica control/run/govern this forum?
stunsworth Posted May 14, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 14, 2010 ...does Leica control/run/govern this forum? The answer to all of those question is no. The only connection is the the administrator has contacts at Leica. There is no official connection.
Gerard Posted May 14, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted May 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just to clarify: my point was that if any forum is going to have a front end, owned/run by the commercial brand or not; it really ought to satisfy the need of the user. All can see the interest of the user at each/any moment in time here and, right now, the home page does not satisfy the their expectation. Leica does not own/run the forum, but the front end does not deliver the exciting news we, the enthusiast, desires. So why is it there?
aesop Posted May 15, 2010 Share #8 Posted May 15, 2010 ...it may not hit all the right spots at the moment, but I am confident that those who give up their time to run the forum (for free) have plans for the home page. In good time, DarthVader. Note that my assertion is a wild leap of faith - I have no knowledge of future plans for the forum nor am I connected to its operation. andybarton Posted May 15, 2010 Share #9 Posted May 15, 2010 Which home page are you referring to? Can you provide the URL, please?
pop Posted May 15, 2010 Share #10 Posted May 15, 2010 That must be http://www.l-camera-forum.com/index.html and its German counterpart. It reads "Today the project team with Andy Barton, Steve Unsworth and Bill Palmer has posted the terms and conditions of the Leica User Forum Book!" andybarton Posted May 15, 2010 Share #11 Posted May 15, 2010 Most people would use the same URL without inserting the "index.html" bit, which will bring you straight to the forum page. I don't know what plans Andreas has for that page. I can confirm that this forum has the closest relationship of any forum with Leica, but is completely independant of the company and is entirely privately run. It is supported by subscriptions from members who choose to, the buy & sell section and advertising by sponsoring dealers. And it has volunteer Moderators. pop Posted May 15, 2010 Share #12 Posted May 15, 2010 That page is shown when you klick on the tab labelled "home" on top of every forum page. Some time ago, Andreas asked for feedback on the then presumably new home page. It appears that the page has gone to sleep since then.

LUF Admin Posted May 15, 2010 Share #14 Posted May 15, 2010 The index.html and index_de.html are the rest of a successful experiment - successful as the result was: Fail I've learned that the forum home is and will stay the real start page of this site, news will be published from now on in the Leica Blog. I'll cancel the remaining links in the next few days (or minutes...). Andreas

Gerard Posted May 18, 2010 Author Share #17 Posted May 18, 2010 Now it's gone... I kind of miss it. In a stange way. Wish I'd never mentioned it. I enjoyed clicking on that tab each day and seeing the same stories week after week. It felt like home. ;-)

marcg Posted May 19, 2010 Share #19 Posted May 19, 2010 have you thought about at least updating the pages with RSS feeds. It can be anything about leica or about photography in general. At the very least it feeds the spiders and it keeps the pages looking fresh for no manual input at all. Even if you think that no one is going there, the spiders always visit
