therefromhere Posted May 11, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, this is my first post - so here it goes. I've got an M8.2 and just received it back from Solms after one month of repair for the dead-pixel problem. It used to have a nasty red-line at high ISOs, but I had detected it all the way down to ISO 160. I've just now done some tests shots and see the problem is now a green line - mostly at high ISOs only. Of course, I have all the nice documentation from Solms saying "fixed and tested". The camera was set to JPG when the problem has only shown up in DNG. Methodical they are not. So far, I've had some incredibly wonderful photos from Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia ruined by the red-line problem and am not in any way excited to find out how the green-line problem can ruin photos. Basically, I'm incredibly annoyed with Solms. Any advice for what to do? Any similar experiences with solutions? I purchased this direct from Leica Camera, so no dealers can help... jaapv Posted May 11, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 11, 2010 What do you mean by "green line"? If it is a wide green band to half-way the image, it is a known M8 glitch caused by an strong highlight on the edge of the frame. There is no cure, but it is fortunately rare and easily avoided by placing the highlight differently. It is not quite fair to be annoyed at Solms, as a dead pixel line is caused by cosmic radiation, and Leica can hardly be blamed for the Big Bang. therefromhere Posted May 11, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted May 11, 2010 Hi Jaap, It's not really a green band, more of line. It looks a lot like the red-line, dead pixel I used to have except now much darker. I'll post a photo later on to show off my lines.

Jark89 Posted May 11, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 11, 2010 I'm not sure (never used it myself), but maybe this program called Pixel Fixer might be able to help you fix your otherwise ruined photos in the mean time. therefromhere Posted May 12, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted May 12, 2010 Hi again, It's still very bright here, so I do not yet have a spot for setting up a good test shot (must be fairly dark). This is the photo where I "first" noticed that the problem is either back, or wasn't fixed. Notice the line is dark - it looks green to me when I view the original DNG. Before servicing at Solms, the line was red. This evening, I'll set up the tripod and take another set of photos. Hi Jark: I have seen that program and admit it would be a solution and will attempt to fix my damaged photos. But it feels a bit like driving a new BMW with the windows down because the air conditioning isn't working correctly. As an emergency, it works. Going forward, though, it's just not a solution for fine Leica glass. Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted May 12, 2010 Share #8 Posted May 12, 2010 Yes I see it - maybe some overcompensation in pixel mapping, if that is possible. I would send an example to Solms if I were you.
therefromhere Posted May 14, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted May 14, 2010 Hi Jaap, Sent sample to Solms. They believe this is a software issue. Camera got boxed up and shipped off again today. My Leica travels more than I do!
therefromhere Posted June 24, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted June 24, 2010 Update: M8.2 came back from Solms. Same problem different location. M8.2 went back to Solms. Came back completely inoperable (SD CARD FULL error). Letter to Solms. Post to Forum. I have lost patience with this particular M8.2 and Leica's Service Dept. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your that you (and/or Leica) will find a solution soon.
therefromhere Posted June 25, 2010 Author Share #12 Posted June 25, 2010 Update (2): got home to a very nice email from Solms. They are discussing replacing my camera body but will need the old/dead one back first (which seems fair and logical). As I'm traveling now, it's my problem to get to a place where I can stay put long enough to send and receive a package from Germany - so now the delays are my fault not theirs (also seems fair and logical). Of course, the saga isn't over yet, but there is progress. I think in hindsight, I just got a bad egg and no one has really known what to do about it. Perhaps many M8's have the problem I had, but because of the type of photography I enjoy it was more problematic. Of course, I am trying to overlook the last repair where the camera came back with the broken SDcard slot. Hopefully soon I will have something to put my glass on!
