Can anyone offer any advice on how do you get the EP-1 Thumbs Up device off of your camera? That thing is stuck in the hot shoe and I don't see how it is coming out. This is more than a tight fit.

Thanks

I managed to wiggle the Thumbs Up out, but I am returning it. As for the screw, I am told that the screw system doesn't apply to this model.

I also was told that there have been some problems installing the Thumbs Up because the M9 hot shoe is tighter than the M8.2's. While I can see why people like this product, I would proceed with caution. Any accessory that can be put on a camera should be able to be taken off the camera with ease.

I have two Thumbs Up, both fit fine on the M8 but are a very tight fit on the M9. I've found there is a very small amount of "sideways" slack that allows me to rock the Thumbs Up from side to side in the shoe whilst pulling it backward to remove it. I've found the problem gets less with use. I also applied a very small amount of fine oil to the side runners of the Thumbs Up.

The rocking out was exactly how I removed it.

I e-mailed Tim Isaac about this when I got mine and he explained how to take it off as follows - I hope he won't mind me quoting his response here:

-----

"Yes, the TU-EP-1 should fit tighter since there is no locking screw. To remove it, use the fingernail of your middle finger. Find the small removal pocket on the top surface. I use my left hand for this. I fold my middle finger back until it almost touches the palm of my hand, and sort of rest my hand on the back of the camera with the middle finger wedged against the removal slot on top of the TU. Then pull with your middle finger and wiggle the thumb grip handle a little with your right hand. It will be stiff at first, then it will come right out."

-----

It is a bit awkward maybe but I can attest to the fact it works if you don't have fragile fingernails! Note that in my case I was using on an M8.2 but believe me, it was still plenty tight.

Tim responds very quickly to questions in my experience and he is very helpful. I'm pleased that the EP-1 fits securely and, thankfully, I very rarely use a flash.

After conversations with Tim about this subject, I quickly scraped the bottom down- took two minutes and a little patience. Now it is just snug. I will note I have the same issue with a Leica 21mm Viewfinder and the SF58 flash. Always have resort to the "wiggle." So why is the hotshoe tighter- couldn't answer me at the Roadshow.....

I just took a file to the bottom of the TU and took a skim of brass off until it was just tight and not mega tight. Its still a wiggle to remove, but I don't tighten it with the screw and its not going to fall off.

Its better tight, if its loose it leaves a mark on the body were it touches. My M8 has a rub mark where the loose TU wore thru the paint.

Removing is very simply using my cable tie method, far better that rocking back and forth. I keep a few of the smallest cable ties in my case.

You're going to have the same problem with every accessory on your M9, the hotshoe is very tight until it wears in.

If you send back your thumbs up you'll just have reduced ergonomics and be no richer for the effort. Just my opinion of course.

My experience is different from yours. I just received my S58 and it is nowhere near as tight a fit as the Thumbs up. Maybe that one exercise with the Thumbs up broke in the hot shoe, but the S58 was easy to put in and relatively easy to take out--I used a rocker technique to get it started and then it just came right out.
