drdannn Posted May 5, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does the Pana Lumix GF1 qualify as a Leica? I realize that Leica may be grinding the Lumix lenses. Does this camera "qualify" to post in the LUF??? Thanks for your answers. I tried the camera out a Samy's Camera , and loved it, especially the 1.7 lens and the optional EVF. Advertisement Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 Hi drdannn, Take a look here Does the Pana GF1 qualify as a Leica for LUF?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
erl Posted May 5, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 5, 2010 If it has any Leica component, it qualifies. eg. the lens.
drdannn Posted May 5, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted May 5, 2010 Ok, so you are saying that the Lumix lens is not a Leica component. Hence, I would need , for example, an R lens on the GF1?
stunsworth Posted May 5, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 5, 2010 Dan, that's correct. If the 20mm lens had Leica written on the front then it would be ok. Since it hasn't - which is a pity as it's a superb lens - then it's not admissible. So you'd need to be using Leica M or R lenses (or the Leica 4:3 45mm macro lens) to qualify. Speaking of the 20mm I'm becoming more and more convinced that there's some in camera corrections going on. The lens just seems to good to be true at the price. Maybe some kind of design supervision or a set of performance criteria as a condition for licensing the brand name, and that is all.
andybarton Posted May 5, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 5, 2010 Does the Pana Lumix GF1 qualify as a Leica? I realize that Leica may be grinding the Lumix lenses. No. Leica have nothing to do with Lumix lenses.

I agree, but it provides an arbitrary line regarding what's allowed in the forum, and what isn't.

AFAIK they are designed by Leica & they recieve royalties for the Panasonic turnover. Also apparantly there are (annual?) meetings of Panasonic & Leica engineers. andybarton Posted May 5, 2010 Share #10 Posted May 5, 2010 And Leica have trained QC people in the factory looking after the lenses with the Leica brand on the front.
brucek Posted May 5, 2010 Share #11 Posted May 5, 2010 Although the 20mm f/1.7 lens wouldn't be acceptable you could always get the 45mm f/2.8 MFT macro-elmarit that PanaLeica makes. I've just started playing around with the lens and it seems to be a pretty good one.
rosuna Posted May 5, 2010 Share #12 Posted May 5, 2010 And Leica have trained QC people in the factory looking after the lenses with the Leica brand on the front. Maybe true, for the selection of the units Leica takes for the Leica branded compact cameras (manufactured by Panasonic, or any other subcontractor). Also apparantly there are (annual?) meetings of Panasonic & Leica engineers. The royalties may cover the licensing of the brand name. Mr. Lee had a "hot" meeting with Panasonic some time ago. Now the relations between Panasonic and Leica may have changed. They are taking separate directions.
dhsimmonds Posted May 7, 2010 Share #14 Posted May 7, 2010 The Panasonic (Lumix?) lenses are no slouches in IQ performance. Panasonic have vast experience in making lenses for their well respected video cams. It doesn't alter the fact though that the lens needs the "magic" Leica name for any image it produces to be accepted on this forum!

Now the relations between Panasonic and Leica may have changed. They are taking separate directions. There is a system there. The design is done by Panasonic with Leica input. Then the design team comes to Solms for a week to have it torn apart. They go home "with drooping ears"as a Leica guy put it to me and the process is repeated several times. When Leica approves in the last session the lens goes in production and Leica will supervise the production.

bill Posted May 7, 2010 Share #17 Posted May 7, 2010 Good try, but no. Neither will using a Leica filter, wearing a Leica watch or polo shirt, or speaking in a German accent Regards, Bill
dugby Posted May 7, 2010 Share #18 Posted May 7, 2010 Ok..... this would have to qualify as a way to discuss the GF1 here, using the Leica D 14-50mm 2.8-3.5 Vario-Elmarit copyright image from external site removed
drdannn Posted May 8, 2010 Author Share #19 Posted May 8, 2010 Ok..... this would have to qualify as a way to discuss the GF1 here, using the Leica D 14-50mm 2.8-3.5 Vario-Elmarit THAT'S A GREAT IDEA. I have a Digilux 3 and it never occurred to me. All I need is a 4/3 to micro 4/3 adapter. Which adapter did you buy? THANKS. Dan
