stevenhacker Posted May 4, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) What appears to be a thin film of plastic coating is beginning to bubble up, especially around the perimeter of the Leica M 8.2 label. Is this a common occurrence? Or, is the plastic coating simply the factory protective wrapping that could have been removed upon delivery?
Advertisement Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Hi stevenhacker, Take a look here Covering of M8.2 base plate bubbling up?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

Makes we laugh when I see adverts with "still got plastic on base". It's a camera, just use it...
jaapv Posted May 4, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 4, 2010 It is indeed the protective foil. Many leave it on as protection, but as you found it will have to be removed at one point.
ho_co Posted May 5, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 5, 2010 Maybe we could just buy new baseplates when the label starts to peel? I wonder if they all come with the same compatibility sticker.
menos I M6 Posted May 5, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 5, 2010 You can't imagine, how much more beautiful the camera looks after removing the foil and the label ;-) Just take it off.
matlep Posted May 5, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 5, 2010 You can't imagine, how much more beautiful the camera looks after removing the foil and the label ;-)Just take it off. +1 I totally agree. Why leave an ugly piece of bubbling plastic on such a beautiful camera.
Marty Posted May 5, 2010 Share #7 Posted May 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Actually on my M8.2's it stuck so firmly I was not sure it could come off at all. On the M9 it came off by itself after a week. And yes it looks much better without.
epand56 Posted May 5, 2010 Share #8 Posted May 5, 2010 I've grown sort of affictionate to my bubbly protecting foil on the baseplate. After two years and a half it gives the camera a less serious look. I didn't noticed it when I bought the camera and when I did, a year and a half was gone and it started bubbling. But I don't mind, being on the bottom nobody see it, not even me
mhoersch Posted May 5, 2010 Share #9 Posted May 5, 2010 I always carry my M8 upside down so people can see how beautiful the base plate looks without the bubbly sticky foil!
danyves Posted May 5, 2010 Share #10 Posted May 5, 2010 As said, take it off. Do eliminate residual glue.
stunsworth Posted May 5, 2010 Share #11 Posted May 5, 2010 As said, take it off. Do eliminate residual glue. Lighter fluid on a cotton wool ball will remove any glue, just be careful not to get any on the inside of the baseplate as it will also remove the paint on the inside. What about the paint on the outside? Presumably you used the lighter fuel trick on a black chrome baseplate?

mjh Posted May 5, 2010 Share #14 Posted May 5, 2010 Incidentally, the review copy of the M9 I got from Leica had the protecting foil removed (the camera was in pristine condition, btw). If Leica doesn’t care to restore this ugly piece of plastic after it has come off, why should we?
stunsworth Posted May 5, 2010 Share #15 Posted May 5, 2010 What about the paint on the outside? Presumably you used the lighter fuel trick on a black chrome baseplate? Yes. I promise to read the questions properly before responding in future.
steelduck Posted May 5, 2010 Share #16 Posted May 5, 2010 Take it off or you are like the grandmother who refuses to take the plastic cover of the sofa.
LeicaMSeattle Posted May 5, 2010 Share #17 Posted May 5, 2010 Take it off or you are like the grandmother who refuses to take the plastic cover of the sofa. That's because she knows that the grandkids are going to spill stuff on it!
SJP Posted May 5, 2010 Share #18 Posted May 5, 2010 I am happy to keep my bubbly bottom protected by a Leica half case so it will not fall off:D Note: when using lighter fuel for cleaning stuff it is wise to avoid igniting it, white spirit is just as effective and slightly less flammable. wilfredo Posted May 5, 2010 Share #19 Posted May 5, 2010 Steven, Has any of this been helpful? At the very least I hope it has calmed any anxiety.
rami G Posted May 5, 2010 Share #20 Posted May 5, 2010 Don't wish to add bubbles to the water, but when I sold my M7, couple of years ago, I got an extra 200$ when they found that it is "like new- still with the original plastic on"... ; >) (true, I was mostly using my two M6ttls, so it was rather well kept)
