A4 printer for BW

I m going to buy a new imac soon. I d like to add a A4 printer with it but i don't know which one to choose

I've been using Epson R800 for almost two years now and I must say I'm very happy with it. It has eight separate color cartridges, very economic.

 

With it I'm using mostly Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk, very good combination indeed. For BW prints I strongly recommend the Quad Tone Rip program, for it enables you to use blacks only (Welcome to QuadToneRIP).

 

Problem is that I don't know does Epson still produces this model.

I tend to think the better B&W printers are higher end A3 types, like the Epson R2880, so if you mostly do B&W you should look at those. They aren't that much bigger than an A4 printer and would cost a similar amount to run.

A second hand Epson R2400 is a good option for a B&W printer, if you can find one.

Problem is that I don't know does Epson still produces this model.

 

They're still around: I bought one just a couple of weeks ago. Can't comment on its B&W performance but it's good for colour. I'd have gone for A3 myself but just don't have the desk/table/shelf space.

maybe get a cheap Epson P50 and a dedicated b&w inkset?
