srivastava Posted May 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looking for advice, guys, I have really enjoyed my DMC L1 for 2 years. However, it is a significantly sized camera that I can't just load into my bag when I drive to work, etc. There have been times when I have missed some really good shots beccause I had no camera. I was thinking of the D Lux 4 ( or Lumix LX3) and almost bought it until I saw the reviews for the Lumix GF1. The 20mm lens sounds great. I have to admit, I have used my LI on Auto mode 90% of time. Which camera would be a good buy for an amateur like me who wants to do mainly street photography or take pictures of my children, etc. I know the GF 1 costs almost the double but I am prepared to pay for it over 6 months if it is a clear winner. Thanks Rajat
Advertisement Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 Hi srivastava, Take a look here D Lux 4 or Pana GF1. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted May 4, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 4, 2010 I have the GF1 and it's excellent. It's the carry around p&s camera that I've been looking for for years. The 20mm lens is superb and at f1/7 there's very shallow depth of field to work with if that's what you want. Here's a photograph from this afternoon to illustrate what I mean, I focused on the mascot's head.... Welcome, dear visitor! burkey Posted May 4, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 4, 2010 I have the Dlux 4 and carry it everywhere with me. It's a great camera. As for the GF-1 I don't really know . I chose the E-P2 and use the Panasonic 20/1.7 on it a lot. A very useful combination. The Olympus EVF is excellent. Good luck in your decision making. . . . srivastava Posted May 4, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted May 4, 2010 Thank you Steve and Burkey. Very helpful. I think I am leaning towards the GF 1.... Rajat
jsrockit Posted May 4, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 4, 2010 Always go for the bigger sensor... as long as you can handle the extra size of the unit.
anwarabdhamid Posted May 5, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 5, 2010 yup GF1 got bigger sensor, but DLux4 gives better mobility...and the red dot

drdannn Posted May 5, 2010 Share #8 Posted May 5, 2010 I have the d lux 4 with a handgrip and viewfinder. I love it. Also, I tried out the GF1 at Samy's Camera in L.A. and was VERY impressed. No red dot tho' , but it's fantastic. Autofocusing was amazingly fast on the GF1. EVF was also very bright and crisp. The camera settings were easy to read in the EVF also; highly recommended as an optional add of for the pana. Either way, you can't go wrong. I also agree about the 1.7 lens. It's got a lot to offer in the DOF area. Dan
F1Addict Posted May 5, 2010 Share #9 Posted May 5, 2010 I moved from an LX3 to a GF1 with the 20mm lens and it was definitely a step up in IQ and image quality. Yes, it's slightly bigger than the LX3 / DLUX 4, but it's a joy to use.
stunsworth Posted May 5, 2010 Share #10 Posted May 5, 2010 I also agree about the 1.7 lens. It's got a lot to offer in the DOF area. Dan Close up the depth of field is much less than I expected - this is a good thing. I know I could have worked it out, but I didn't. Here's another shot at f2 - 20mm lens again... jackart Posted May 9, 2010 Share #12 Posted May 9, 2010 I have both. Currently I'm shooting mainly GF1 because of so much improved quality and excellent 20mm F1,7. Size is not so portable as D-Lux 4 had. So If You are really looking for very portable always with You cam, go for D-Lux 4, otherwise to GF1.

Interesting point...I would value your opinion as you have both. I will be shooting mainly in aperture priority or auto mode . Portability is important . I am thinking of selling the L1 body and buying a portable one. If the picture quality is vastly improved , I'll go for GF
cbretteville Posted May 10, 2010 Share #14 Posted May 10, 2010 There is also the zoom range of the LX3. I like the 24mm eq wide end of the smaller camera and have found it really usefull. The 20mm pancake on the GF1 is a great lens, but I find it's 40mm fov just a little tight in a lot of cases. A wider pancake has been announced, but that will be an f2,8 lens (if I'm not mistaken). cbretteville Posted May 10, 2010 Share #15 Posted May 10, 2010 On my way out this morning I grabbed a couple of shots of the two cameras with my phone so you can see the size difference. Apologies for the horrible quality. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! stunsworth Posted May 10, 2010 Share #16 Posted May 10, 2010 I have the LX2 and GF-1 - with the 20mm lens. While the LX2 is a very good compact p&s camera, images from the GF-1 are in a different league. Far better fine detail, and high ISO performance is much, much better. If I had to choose one or the other I would choose the GF-1 without a second thought.
