imported_reinierv Posted May 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all coming weekend I will very likely be in London (7-10/5) would be nice to meet some leiconians there. Anyone time for a drink and an outing to shoot (although I'm sorry, will not bring a leica, maybe a fed though) also I'm looking for construction sites, the bigger the better, where I could make some pictures for a magazine I work for. Anyone can give me any tips or has contacts? drop me line Reinier
Advertisement Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 Hi imported_reinierv, Take a look here Will be in London. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted May 3, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 3, 2010 I won't be in London next weekend, but be VERY careful when shooting construction sites. The security guards will be down on you like a ton of bricks if you aren't careful. You could be a terrorist, you see...
imported_reinierv Posted May 3, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted May 3, 2010 too bad Andy any tips on where they are building something big and what company is involved?
biglouis Posted May 4, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 4, 2010 Reiner One of the best exposed site (or at least last time I passed it was) is the Shard of Glass site at London Bridge. There is a raised pedestrian walkway next to the site which allows overhead views into it. They can't exactly stop you from photographing from this angle. However, as Andy suggests, some caution is required when photographing construction sites, if only because of the people working there. My plans for next weekend are a bit vague but if my time free's up I'll try to connect with you. LouisB
andybarton Posted May 4, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 4, 2010 I might, unexpectedly, be available on Sunday.
spylaw4 Posted May 4, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 4, 2010 The biggest construction site is the Olympics Site, but as Louis will tell you Security is very vigilant and you won't get inside it or near enough to it for meaningful shots anyway. There are a few sites in the City but again security is vigilant and the City Police seem to have a heavy-handed approach. I've virtually stopped shooting new architecture in the City but I'm going to have a field day at Open House weekend this year!
imported_reinierv Posted May 4, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted May 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mmm I will see how far I get should be strange to be not allowed to take pictures in public space anyone any contacts with builders so I could get in, doesn't have to be really big? imported_reinierv Posted May 4, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted May 4, 2010 BTW I send you both a mail with my phone number if it didn't arrive let me know
earleygallery Posted May 5, 2010 Share #9 Posted May 5, 2010 I was also going to suggest the Shard at London Bridge, there are little 'viewing holes' in the hoardings around it and up on the walkway which runs from London Bridge station towards Guys hospital.. hard for them to argue that you can't take photos if they're inviting people to look! Also remember there's no law against photography in public here so stand your ground if you are confronted! I'm not around this weekend unfortunately. imported_reinierv Posted May 5, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted May 5, 2010 Best thing for me would be that I can enter the building site and make close-ups of people working there I will be there only friday evening till monday evening, so probably only monday would be possible. Which big construction companies exist in London I can write to?
earleygallery Posted May 5, 2010 Share #11 Posted May 5, 2010 I doubt you'll be allowed, with all the Health and Safety issues and "where there's blame there's a claim" mentality, I can't imagine that any site manager is going to risk it, especially at such short notice - you'd have to sign all sorts of legal waivers and that's not going to happen in a couple of days. There's always lots of construction going on in and around the City, just take a stroll through starting from London Bridge and zig/zag a route up to Liverpool Street, as well as heading over to the Olympics site. Xmas Posted May 6, 2010 Share #12 Posted May 6, 2010 Hi Reiner I'll be around London some of the weekend, I'm not sure you will get good shots of sites, unless you can sneak them from from multi story shops or car parks. I'll PM my mobile so we can meet if you don't have any one else around. Big Lewis has it already. I'll probably have some LTM lenses that you could use on the Fed for a different angle, I think they will clear the Feds rangefinder followers. imported_reinierv Posted May 6, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted May 6, 2010 good idea, to go and find some car parks in the city and shoot from there...I'll have to remember that. I'v have send you a PM, I didn't get yours yet Would be great to have some good conversations with photographers over there. Am interrested to know what photographers in the UK/London have to deal with ;-) and maybe have a good lunch/diner/drink/shooting together. Btw how about photographing in the subway? giordano Posted May 6, 2010 Share #14 Posted May 6, 2010 Btw how about photographing in the subway? In principle you need to buy a permit (see Guide to filming | Transport for London) but in practice you probably won't be bothered as long as you don't look commercial, don't have a crew and model with you, and don't make a nuisance of yourself. Don't use flash and - especially - don't do anything that obstructs the flow of people at peak times.

farnz Posted May 9, 2010 Share #18 Posted May 9, 2010 Reinier, Only just spotted this thread or I would have tried to meet up. (It's a busy time because the bluebells are at their peak this weekend and will probably have been overgrown by ferns and brambles by next weekend but I think I could have made some time - sorry.) Maybe next time? Hope you're not reading this after spending some time at Her Majesty's Pleasure after photographing the wrong building:rolleyes: and that you enjoyed your stay in London. Pete. imported_reinierv Posted May 11, 2010 Author Share #19 Posted May 11, 2010 Noel showed me some very interresting places, thanks very much to him I even took pictures of security camera's in de metro with 10 bobbies falling over me... Must say I was totally impressed by the enormous amount of camera's, guards and fences. BB is coming true there but we will be back later this year and I will put it on the forum earlier this time
