Thorsten..the quality of the work is outstanding...but I simply do not enjoy her "self -concious" "I'm a Videographer" expression..it doesn't interest me in the least....the dress may be beautiful, the woman may be beautiful.....as for myself ..I would insist or continue shooting until I was able to "navigate around " the self-concious attitude".... or if I could not..I'd simply say..sorry it doesn't work for me today..:(

Thanks for sharing

Cheers, JRM

Thanks all.

DD,

Considering I did not use any reflectors or light it's quite a compliment. Thanks.

JRM,

It's kind of how she looks. Hungarian ladies (getting into a generality here, but I feel there is some truth in it) are tough and demanding. So in a sense, it's a precise portrait. The look and the lips of course underlines it, perhaps unnecessarily strong.

Excellent portrait, Thorsten. The expression is unusual and mysterious. Also, congratulations on completion of your project.

I'm not sure what Stefan means by "artificial looking," but perhaps he will explain it to us. Maybe he means "posed" os opposed to "candid."

She recently gave me permission to publish her portrait. This is Krisztina whom I traveled for a month with after the tsunami in South East Asia. She did video interviews and video documentary while I did interviews and stills for my AFTER THE TSUNAMI project at http://www.afterthetsunami.org

The dress she is wearing is one she had made while we stayed in India for some days. The rest of the time we were dressed with trousers with lots of pockets and able to withstand dirt and all.

SL mot 80mm F/1.4 100 ISO Astia, Imacon scan

First - this is a GREAT shot !!!!

Second - if this is scan then Imacon is definitely better than Nikon, I NEVER achieved these results with my Coolscan V ED.

What Imacon Scanner do yu use?

Here you go Peter.

Here is the Imacon Flextight Photo scan on "Perform Auto Corrections" which i often use. It simply puts the scan into the range where is should mostly be.

On this one I have sharpened the hires and then again sharpened the lowres.

And here is the "RAW" Imacon Flextight Photo scan where I've reset the scanners corrections ny "Reload Corrections." This is a setting I use more and more as the preview is rather small and sometimes the "AUTO" results in closed shadow areas or burned out highlight. The "Reload Corrections" mostly produce a more greyish, unsexy, scan whcih you can then manipulate in any direction in PS

This scan is probably the one I would choose. For the fun of it I took the liberty of sharpening twice the hires and then sharpening again the lowres for the forum.

Looking at the hires scans I would say there is hell of a difference between Nikon and Imacon. But judge for your self.

I've made the hires scans available for you (and anybody else who would like to download them). Feel free to play around with them. The two Imacon scans are directly from the scanner as is (no sharpening, no nothing). The Nikon one is (probably) a corrected one (sharpened and colors adjusted to some degree).

Thorsten

thank you indeed for these examples. I also like the IMACON RAW scan most!

Question is if one could not setup the Coolscan in a way that it produces similar results.

Best regards

I think you could. However, the Nikon scanner software is just so ... comlicated! I gave up on learning to use it. But it should be possible to set it to a 'neutral' scanning which is what the Imacon does; an even scan no matter the subject.

Only in cases where your slide is too darl og too light that neutral scan will cause problems that an automatic setting will usually help to gain back by adjusting.
