Happy Ending

I haven't had any issue (yet?) with the used 8.2 I recently bought, but reading all the issues with shutters, banding, SD card, battery, etc. that you & other Leica owners have experienced is starting to give me agita. Maybe it's good preparation for the day when I will eventually experience a hiccup with the camera, but I was expecting better quality from a $4000 camera (what I paid for mine). I've never had any issues whatsoever with any of my prior cameras from cheap compacts to DSLRs. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret the purchase because I love the results I'm getting so far, but sure wish quality control in Portugal/Solms was better.

I hear you, and I share your experience with other brands I have owned and continue to use such as Canon. Many on this forum haven't had any issues with their M8's but enough of us have to raise concerns about quality control at Leica. The irony is that this doesn't seem to affect Leica sales at all but I suspect that if these quality control issues were resolved, Leica would be selling at least twice as many cameras, there would be no stopping Leica.

Like many, I stick to the M8 simply because I like the rangefinder as a tool. The M8 is small, non-intrusive, has a solid build, and the images I get are rewarding. The Kodak CCD sensor is the heart of the camera and if that sensor were available in another rangefinder I would consider it.

At times you hear rumors of other digital M's by other companies such as Nikon, hitting the markets. Can you imagine a FF Nikon digital M with low noise? I suspect they would fly off the shelves due to a lower price tag, and reliable quality alone. Leica is fortunate it has no competition in the digital M world but you never know, that could change. A discreet looking Nikon or Canon digital M would create a storm. I think QC should become a top priority at Leica.

I suspect not; a Nikon S3 costs considerably more than an M7....

I never had a shutter problem. In all fairness it should be noted that although some of us have had problems with the M8, most people haven't. And Leica will work with you if a problem arises. I feel like a kid with a new toy with the replacement M8 they sent me from Solms via Allendale. Yes, I believe QC can improve at Leica but I ackowledge that Leica did the right thing by me.
