Now I am convinced

Now I am convinced that most, if not all of the M8 problems reported here have to do with the IR sensitivity of the sensor.

I was doing a spot of IR photography for fun on my M8 with the Summicron ASPH 35, and 092 filter and had slipped on the SF 24 D flash, as flashlight produces huge amounts of IR. Camera setting 1250 ISO flash at GNC. Just to make myself clear, I am not horrified/gobsmacked or panicking. It was an unusual situation with an interesting result and the camera as such is troublefree. Flashless IR photography is without problem. I'll post in a seperate thread.

Look what I teased the sensor into doing:

The camera is one of the unproblematic ones, not yet updated and 1.06 software.

The current set of "issues" like the vertical faint streaks appear to be modulations of the dark current noise, somehow achieved when the camera is basically talking to itself. The variability of the white balance may also reflect untamed instabilities in the calibration loop of the M8. This one adds the extra freakiness of having a flash connected. I would expect that Leica might sort out white balance variability first, then the shadow noise modulation, and then finally whatever wild timing fluctuations are captured when a flash turns out to be 10 or more stops weaker than expected.

hoi jaap

you dont get that without the flash jaap ?

i undestand what you mean, do you think it might be in camera post processing tho ?

because thats where i am at with it

Only with flash. Totally white frames too. That is why it is not an issue. It simply is that this camera cannot do flash photography with an IR pass filter on the lens. It would be interesting to see what happens if the flash is filtered as well (as one has to do when using IR film btw) but I have no IR filter for the flash.

Now that is truly interesting. The more I see of this, the more I really want to see a detailed technical postmortem of what the problem was & how it was fixed. I bet it will be a fascinating set of engineering puzzles. It's a tribute to Leica's interface designers that it's easy to forget how complex a device we're actually using.

Maybe better to post my first attempt ever at an IR photograph here instead of in a separate thread. I'm sure I (and the M8) can do much better when I get the hang of it, but it is proof that it works. Summicron asph 35 with 092 filter, ISO 125 1/60th @ 2.8

Jaap,

Have you have any problem getting the focus correct for the Christmas tree photo? The LL website mentioned difficulty in focusing.

Thanks,

Bob Pierce

I bracket my focussing, I'll get the hang of it in the end...
