Advertisement Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 Hi likalar, Take a look here Allards J2X circa 1952, San Francisco, 2010. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
iShutterbug Posted April 26, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 26, 2010 Ahh, muscle sports cars--great! What does this picture look like in color? Don
likalar Posted April 27, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted April 27, 2010 Thanks, Don, Here's a color version, pretty much untweaked, except for removing a no parking sign. I have to admit to hating signs. I also wish all car rally/exhibiters would rethink their show-issued id number sheets (like the one on the windscreen on the left). They're always stuck on the windshield, and ruin every photograph. They could put them into a plastic sleeve and tape them to the pavement, or leave them on the seat. Rant over! ;-) Larry
thompsonkirk Posted April 27, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 27, 2010 Hi, Larry – A pleasure to see these cars! Around the time those Allards were built, they used to be raced in Golden Gate Park – with Mercury & Cadillac engines, which hardly seems sporting. It was a road race with few provisions for safety, just a few hay bales. At the last one the crowd didn't realize there were still cars circling the track after the finish, & one of the more famous drivers (maybe Phil Hill?) had to pile his car into a tree to avoid hitting people who shouldn't have been in front of him. Nice to see them again! Kirk
iShutterbug Posted April 27, 2010 Share #5 Posted April 27, 2010 I think I like the color shot better. For some reason I felt they would just "jump" out at you, didn't know they were red. That's a black Porsche on the right, and is that a 2-liter Ferrari in French racing blue on the left? I agree with you about those placards, they should be on the ground in front, or someplace easily Photoshopped out. We just love California. In 1982 we spent a year going back and forth from Tahoe/Reno to Vegas via the Coastal Highway in a classic 250SE with Florida license tag, "EAS 007". I supported us playing '21' at casinos on either end, sounds fun in the movies but boring as hell in real life. Unfortunately I found out if you win consistently they ask you to leave which to me became a badge of honor but no more income and free food and "hi-roller" bus. I haven't been to a casino since then except I picked off a few Euros at Monte Carlo last year--the European decks have all numbers and no face cards! We'll probably do the same thing later this year, this time my focus (pun intended) will be on Yosemite, Hearst Castle, Big Sur, SF, Redwoods, Tahoe and Virginia City. elansprint72 Posted April 27, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 27, 2010 The very first J2 (1949) has recently been restored back to it's 1950 Targa Florio spec. See Octane Magazine June 2010 issue (just out in the UK, I thought we were still in April). Very good write-up and some good photos too. I like the B&W shot very much- suits the age of the cars. Somehow the colour version could almost have been taken in Casino Square, Monaco.

likalar Posted April 27, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted April 27, 2010 ..... That's a black Porsche on the right, and is that a 2-liter Ferrari in French racing blue on the left? ........ Don Thank you, Pete and Kirk! Don, nice Monte Carlo shot!! The blue car (in my photo) is a French Talbot. The owner/driver said it's a very rare, one-off car. The cockpit was very rearward. Cool design, and very menacing, softened somewhat by the friendly blue coloring. Larry
iShutterbug Posted April 27, 2010 Share #9 Posted April 27, 2010 Wow, yes I love that design, a true classic. Like the Allards, purpose-built machines, just like I've always liked wire wheels--purpose-built. Don
stuny Posted April 27, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 27, 2010 Larry - Fabulous Allard shot with wonderful tonal richness. Also glad to see more of the car on the left to see it complete and to read it is a Talbot.
