Hi guys,

following your threads for a while today it´s the day of decision: X1 or D90!

Apart from the completely different approach (compact vs. DSLR) I have the following questions:

1. Does anyone of you compared the image quality of the X1 with the Nikon D90 + Nikkor 16-85mm? They are using same Sony-Sensor but there are examples out there showing D90 handles ISO 3200 better than X1. Can anyone confirm?

2. Quality issues - there are many threads out there dealing with that quality issues of the X1

Help me out with my decision!

Thanks

Thomas

hi thomas, you're lucky as i have both the X1 and the Nikon D90 with 16-85 lens. To be honest, an SLR is and always will be an SLR and there are slight advantages over the X1 when comparing picture quality. However, based on its size and portability, i'm finding myself using my X1 more often than my D90 these days. The X1 handles ISO3200 quite admirably for its compactness.

In terms of build quality, sad to say that the X1 loses out to the D90 but maybe, its only for the first batch of cameras. I'm sure Leica are rectifying the X1's quality issues as we speak.

Thanks artyca,

it´s the compactness which drives my decision I think. Still a bit afraid of the slow AF for children etc. but there I have some experience from my G7. Do you think with shutter half pressed there is sligtly a good chance to grab it?

If i am taking pics of my kids (when they are on the move) I usually prefocus/zone focus and then let the camera sing. But so far AF has not been too slow for most of the occasions. Usually the photographer is the bottleneck..

Looking at the comparison purely in mechanical engineering terms, the smaller camera, despite being essentially metal construction, will always appear and actually be a less substantial structure than a modern DSLR. I can only compare with a Pentax K20D which is a super camera in its class. The body mass largely dictates perceived feelings of solidity and construction. Any compact will appear to be the loser when compared in those terms. However, provided the X1 is handled with reasonable care, using the neck strap supplied or approved wrist straps, I am sure that you will find it the more useful camera for anything less than diverse professional jobs, where any DSLR would be preferable.

Taking pictures of children is difficult with the X1 unless it's possible to plan in advance and prefocus. Nothing is of course impossible but an SLR would be much more suitable for some jobs. But for me the compact size has been a very important factor and reality is that the X1 has become my main camera.

Or an M may be better suited.

I think that if you have to ask the question then the D90 is probably the better choice, if only because you won't be restricted by a single focal length and simple feature set.

You don't say what your priorities are - apart from wanting to photograph children.

i have all, the nikon slr, m8 and the x1. and i took hundreds of children´s pics with all. if u adapt all cameras are nice. and u cannot really compare, for they are so different. but guess which camera i use the most now? the x1! i can do things with the x1 taking childrenpics which i cannot with the slr. or the m8. it really depends. when they are moving fast you really need the slr, otherwise not. and the image quality? there is a well known german magazin, color foto, which states in a test that from all ever tested digital compact cams inkluding slr the x1 has the best image quality at iso 100. better than the d90, the d3, the eos 5 mark2 etc

Don´t have priorities, but it should be a "use anywhere for anything" solution. I know about the limitations but I think it will fit to most of my needs.

Anyway I made up my mind yesterday - just played around with the X1 at the local store plus another sleepless night - ended up with: I want it!

Thanks for your comments

Good choice! I think you will not regret it at all, at least I have not.

Hopefully! I ordered today and tomorrow I´ll have it in my hands - unless the delivery boy gets ill!

Today also got the viewfinder at local dealer...

Where?

I got my viewfinder at Hannover, Germany:

Shop is called "Foto Haas" - Foto Haas

They also have a really nice collection of rare Leicas (prototypes etc) - worth to try

I ordered my X1 yesterday online at MEISTER CAMERA - Leica-Spezialist seit 1925 - Start and hope of delivery today (via express). Meister Camera is one of the biggest Leica Stores in Europe. Go and try for it later - as they also ran out of stock with the viewfinders (info 22.April 2010)

Good luck!
