... it's not clear to me Leica will provide a warranty for the entire camera ...

Yes, Leica always gives a full one-year warranty for the entire body/lens/binoculars/etc after a paid repair.

Stefan Daniel mentioned it in the Reichmann M9 intro video.

... However you look at it, ... it's a dismal reflection on Leica's ability to build reliable electronics....

Mark, we weren't aware of repeated problems with the R8 shutter, were we? And Leica chose to use it in the R9.

AFAIK, we weren't aware of repeated problems with the R9 shutter either, were we? And Leica chose to use it in the M8.

Why did the same shutter suddenly become 'unreliable'?

Until the software was changed to make it possible to set both 'discreet' and 'continuous' on the M8, there had been fewer than a dozen cases of the shutter damaging itself.

I don't think I've heard of either of these problems with the M8.2 or M9.

With the current spate of cameras apparently damaged by the 'continuous' + 'discreet' setting, couldn't Leica simply withdraw the current firmware for the M8 only and suggest that all M8s go back to the previous firmware? Surely if the upgrade to 2.004 was an irreversible one, the previous version could be reconfigured pretty quickly to restore whatever parameters were overwritten by installation of 2.004?

Be that as it may, there don't seem to be many cameras damaged by the 'discreet'/'continuous' setting. Certainly, even one is too many for the owner of that one, but I don't think we can conclude that this is "a dismal reflection on Leica's ability to build reliable electronics."

Speaking of gears let's shift to a slightly different shutter question, if no one minds. My M8.2's shutter made a "bouncing" noise when the shutter completed firing. This at approximately 1/250 to 1/500th. It's not unlike the noise a regular M makes at 1/15th and below. The problem persisted until the battery died. It doesn't seem to make it now that it has a fresh battery. Mark inferred problems with power supplies and I'm wondering if this is a weak battery causing that bounce noise at end of shutter release - or possibly as it's wound. Camera has 20,000+ activations of shutter, 99% in single-frame, regular (not discreet) mode, used daily.
