Hank Taylor Posted April 18, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 18, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Question, is it that important and worth paying more for a Leica APO 180/3.4 3 cam E 60 b=ROM? What advantage does the ROM offer when shooting a telephoto lens? Please advise Hank
Advertisement Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 Hi Hank Taylor, Take a look here ROM lens for R?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jamhowa Posted April 30, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 30, 2010 ROM is not all that needed. see link below; Leica FAQ - Why do R lenses come in 2/3-CAM or ROM mounts? Unfortunately, with the death of the R system as an active product in the Leica catalog, it just does not matter a great deal. There will be no more developments that increase what is already in the system. I love my R8 and R lenses but only one 35-70 is ROM enabled. It just doesn't matter now. tobey bilek Posted April 30, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 30, 2010 ROM had some future use planned. It gave exact aperture vale , not nominal value, to the later R camera metering systems. Your camera should work fine without ROM lens as long as it is cammed for camera in use.
symmetron Posted May 1, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 1, 2010 I thought the 180/3.4 was discontinued before the ROM lenses were available?

What advantage does the ROM offer when shooting a telephoto lens? Please advise Hank The ROM only works on R8 and R9s, and is useful for use with DMRs. Hank Taylor Posted May 4, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted May 4, 2010 Thank you for your informative information. Now that I bought 2 ROM lenses, 35-70mm f4 and a 180 MM F3.4. Could have same some money here knowing ahead of time. Also just committed myself on E-bay for a 24mm 2.8 ROM today : reading these threads. andybarton Posted May 4, 2010 Share #7 Posted May 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Don't be mad. Enjoy using the lenses, knowing that you have the very latest and best R glass, all of which is an absolute bargain when compared to an M equivalent ( where one is available ). I would always buy a ROM lens on preference to a non-ROM one, and I no longer have my DMR
roguewave Posted May 4, 2010 Share #8 Posted May 4, 2010 Hank, buy yourself a DMR & you'll see the difference. The 24 is a very fine lens. All my prime R lenses have ROM & in the 80 & 35 Luxes I found the metering to be more accurate, particularly shooting wide open.
moikle Posted May 4, 2010 Share #9 Posted May 4, 2010 I thought the 180/3.4 was discontinued before the ROM lenses were available? I have a ROM version which it also states on the box so it's not a conversion. Mike
leicamr Posted May 5, 2010 Share #10 Posted May 5, 2010 The ROM also sets the flash zoom lens setting automatically which maybe a convenient function if nothing else. I was using numerous ROM fitted lenses many years before the DMR came into the world. Mark
Hank Taylor Posted May 6, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted May 6, 2010 Well, thanks again guys, I was contemplating in getting a non ROM 80 Summilux but after your opinions, which I highly regard, I'm going ahead and shoot for a ROM. Ben, your comment about the DMR, I'm a little concern that will Leica support it down the road . Best regards, Hank

holmes Posted May 11, 2010 Share #14 Posted May 11, 2010 Actually there is another ROM lens which is almost never mentioned. The R 105-280 f 4.2. This was the first ROM lens produced. It is a beautiful lens, producing beautiful results. Be forewarned it is a handful as it is typical Leica, all metal barrel, built in rotating tripod mount. Read on the heavy side, but great on a monopod or tripod. I use two neck straps, one for the camera body, the other for the lens to take the weight off the lens mount. I also have the previously mentioned R 35-70 f4 with an aspheric element for use throughout the zoom range. A lot of people have wondered why Leica never gave it an aspheric designation. On the other hand I have the R 90 f 2 which was introduced around1968 and has basically stayed with only minor improvements; coatings to reduce flare, etc. No ROM. The R 80-200 f4 in very small stamping says made in Japan to Leica specs. A very fine zoom with no ROM on my R6.2s or R 7. So I have both ROM contacts and none. Doesn't make any difference to me or the results.
