Will do, Neli! I think that I was really lucky on this one, as was totally unexpected as I was walking on the street and went by Photo Alpha, in Brussels. Nice and experienced people, by the way, I highly recommend them.

+1

And congratulations to your lens purchase. IMHO, nothing beats portrait with the 75 lux wide open from about 1m--provided you nail the focus.

Since I own my m9, I have almost not used my wonderful 75 cron. I used it a lot with my M8. My wife had new haircut and asked me to shoot her a couple of portraits. I've shot f2 and I was surprised how easy was to use it with the M9. All my shots with good focus and I really enjoyed the 75mm cron. I've never used the lux :(

Ok... I will have a lot to learn and practice, but I am sure that I will love this lens. It performs fine on the M9.

If you had focused on the eyes of the statue, then you probably have back focus on your lens I fear.

Thanks! This is exactly the sort of testing that I am doing not. The statue was not conclusive because it was rather dark, and I am now carrying out tests under good lighting conditions.

After extensive testing... the lens is already on its way to Solms for focus calibration.

Sorry about that. Same happened to me with a 75 Cron, 5 weeks and still waiting for it to return from Solms.

As an advice to those looking for these lenses used, make sure they are correctly calibrated for the M9 before your buy. Because an apparently good deal might cost you money for calibration + wasted time. At 75mm F1.4 or F2, a very slight front or back focus shows immediately.

Well, it´s not just used lenses... One week after I got my M9, I bought a brand new Summicron 35 Asph that was to be my main lens. Then, I went away on a 1 week trip, and noticed that the new lens had a back focus problem (none of my older lenses have a problem on the M9, nor does the Summicron 75 I bought a month ago).

So, off to Solms it went... and I STILL haven´t got it back... 8 weeks later! The service tracking on the Leica web site doesn´t work; neither I nor my dealer can get any reliable info from Solms about what´s happening (I´m not blaming my dealer for the situation; he does what he can to help me out). Last time he called, he got a vague estimate it might reach him on Friday (which is a holiday in Sweden)....

The camera is marvelous. The lenses are fabulous. So, I don´t regret my decision to buy it. But the warranty service, if you need it, is totally sub-par. Leica should be ashamed...

Per,

I found that Leica's service tracking Leica Camera AG - Service - repair tracking seems to work with Firefox but not with the Safari web browser on my Mac.

K-H.

Yes, today it did work; thank you! However, it didn´t, not even using Windoze gear, on any of the previous attempts that both I and my dealer made. And, even now, the serial number won´t work; the repair order number is needed (got it from my dealer..).

Anyhow, here it is:

repair tracking Status request - service order:

repair number XXXXXX

Datum Status

23.03.2010 Service order registered on

26.03.2010 Oder confirmation sent

26.03.2010 In repair

23.04.2010 Repair completed

28.04.2010 Shipment in process.

So: I returned it to my dealer on March 2. Then it took 3 weeks for Solms to register it; let´s just give them the benefit of a doubt and assume the transport was slow...

But then, after they did get it, the repair (a simple focus adjustment of a brand new lens) took almost 1 month, and then another week to even start shipping it (tomorrow, that is...).

I find this handling extremely slow and inefficient. I am normally enthusiastically positive about everything Leica, but this is simply inexcusable, especially since it is a case where their (very expensive) product was faulty out of the box.

I agree, I would have been pissed off. Why did your dealer not take back the lens and proceed with a standard exchange instead of having it repaired?

I tried to track my 75 Cron but the serial number option does not work. That is really a lousy website.

....

Well, normally I would have demanded a new lens right away. Only, my dealer didn´t have any in stock, and the time to get a new delivery was at that time thought to be similar to the estimated repair time... and that lens was just great in IQ, only the plane of focus wasn´t where I intended.

This dealer has been very helpful; at an early stage, he offered to lend me a new Summarit 35 (the only new 35 he had in stock) while waiting. Since I do own an old Summicron 35 V1 from the late ´60:es, I ended up using that instead.

The Summicron is optically far superior, lighter and with a shorter focus throw. The Summilux is fancied by aficionados of optical aberrations. There is no arguing about taste ... until someone tries to foist his private tastes on you.

You must be kidding. That's your 'private taste'. What aberrations?

The 75 'lux is outstanding in every single way. Stopped down to the Cron's F/2 it is almost equal. I'll bet you could not tell the difference. Performance for rest of the F-stop range is equal FAPP.

Regarding throw, well when shooting wide-open I do not want a short-throw. I want precise, micro-movement handling and that's what I have. (It helps to use Leica Goodies' 'steer'. Highly recommended!)
