Just install "Adblock Plus", and you'll never see an ad on this forum again

You do realize that if each time you use an ad-blocker, you're effectively stealing the time and effort of those that run this forum in a way that allows you to use it for free?

Incidentally I also hate this ad. Makes the site look NSFW and tacky, which is a pity. But I personally feel that using ad-blockers is morally wrong on free websites.

Most remuneration for ads is nowadays provided on the basis of clickthrough metrics and/or clicks leading to effective sales.

So, unless you diligently click on every ad presented to you on this website (and ideally purchase the advertised item on top of that), we're in the same boat together.

Well I'm certainly NOT clicking on it -- and if fact am holding my hand over it so I won't see it and have to go barf, but I won't install adblocker either, 'cause that's what pays for this Fantastic Forum.

It's just that it's so retched. :)

BTW, the reasojn I put this in the Post Processing Forum at first is because that's what I imagined this software was, retchid tho the ad may be.

I'm sure that the admins of the site could tell us more if they wanted to (which they probably don't) but I very much doubt the ad sales are based on conversion rates.

It's much more likely in my view, that impressions are counted rather than click-throughs, as many of the advertisers can be assumed to be trying to raise their visibility, rather than making a direct sale from their banner, judging by the sort of advertising this forum tends to host.

I confess to having an extremely negative reaction to the image for the Polylooks ad that keeps appearing on our left sides.

Anyone else find this ad nauseating? I think some marketing guy has an over-vivid imagination.

Yup. Very much so.

K-H.

In this rare case I'm in direct contact to the buyer and the creator of the ads.

Which of the ads is so annoying? Just to be sure we're talking about the same motives...

I'll ask for a different banner.

Best regards from Bonn

Andreas

The one that distresses me is of the woman with the highly colored red lips that are pursed.

Thanks, Andreas.

Bill, it's not that disturbing ;) LOL! You should see my kid eat lemons (yeah, he likes sour)! Why does it bug you? Or is it a just a gut-feel thing?

I can't talk for Bill but I'm genuinely uncomfortable with any advertising (typically cars and cameras) that uses women in provocative or sexual contexts to sell totally unconnected products to a predominantly male audience.

Still, this ad is an improvement on the 'Russian wives' that were offered a while back... :o

Definitely gut-feel. It's both visceral and intellectual. I, too, have a problem with exploitation advertising. Well ... maybe a redhead or two.

BTW, I'm glad that dead horse we were exchanging about is not longer smelling.

 On the LUF? Holy heck! What did I miss, Mani? Seriously, I've had my head so into tweaking my M's focus cam that I totally missed any provocative context to that (I thought) pretty stock ad (for stock photos, right? lol the non-power of ads...).

Still, this ad is an improvement on the 'Russian wives' that were offered a while back... :o
 !!! I missed that one too :) You'd think I came here for the camera stuff or something!

I *do* remember the "at your behest, my liege" or some such nonsense for some online gaming thing. I thought that was a little off... but still not provocative.

Bill--yikes. Don't poke it!!

As for exploitative advertising, I just didn't see it that way. (or at all, evidently) May be a result of getting back from the Las Vegas strip; it's all relative :)

Jamie - the Russian wives ad was just that - a (possibly serious?) dating/matching service, with some example products, if I remember rightly.

I wasn't offended by this pouting woman ad the way that Bill was - in this case it was simply at the embarrassing level. But I am offended when agencies lack the imagination to do anything better than show me some female flesh when they want me to buy a camera or a car or a stereo system.

Not up to me to be an arbiter of what's shown on the forum, though - but I definitely think twice about opening the site when other people are around if I think there'll be dubious content on show.

Sure--makes total sense. It just didn't "register" with me is all.
