Best Leica Lens...

George,

Thanks for the suggestion.

Jamie,

I get what you are saying. For the kind of shooting I mostly do with the M I want that raw texture. I've played with some Summilux ASPH images I lifted from the web and applied some softening and I'm confident that I can do this without making faces look artificially over processed. If I want a softer look I could also use my Canon gear, so that will remain an option for me. Now the search and purchase strategy begins...

Indeed it does.

I had a 400 6.8 and traded it because I didn't use it much.

May sound trite, but I hope I never [have to] sell or trade another piece of Leica gear.

I've ended up regretting it ever time I did so.

Yeah, me too :) I hear that, and I've had to re-buy a couple even!

I'm not familiar with that forum, can you please provide the web page? ...

Wilfredo,

I meant the Buy & Sell boards on the l-camera-forum. Thanks to Doug for providing the link in his post above.

Pete.

My favorite: SL2, Elmarit 2.8/90 mm, Velvia 100 or Ektachrome 100 G. You will have fine Pictures and dont pay a lot of money. The lens ist very sharp in the center at f2.8 and at f5.6 it is good in the corners and even at small distances it is very good if you use an Elpro. The Bokeh is realy fine. You can not have more Leica-Quality with such a low price (max. 500€ for the lens at Ebay.)

The R 80 Summilux is the finest lens I have ever owned or used. By far.

Can you post some shots? I suspect it has a really great bokeh if you think it is the finest lens you've ever owned?

Wilfredo, while you're waiting for Ben to post, you might want to check out his posts in the photo section; there are lots of his wonderful 80 R lux shots there (though I'd love to see more). The first two shots I posted a page or two ago are 80R Lux shots.

It's a wonderful lens with fabulous bokeh and very, very sharp from f2 on. It's not an ASPH design, it has incredibly interesting optical aberrations from 1.4 to 1.8 but coupled with flare rejection and wonderful colour that's second to none IMO it's quite simply breathtaking. The only thing that's close on the M side is the 75 Lux, and it's not the same design, though it's of the same vintage.

There are sharper Leica lenses, but not better ones for certain purposes :)

Actually, the 75 'lux and 80 'lux are essentially identical designs - enough so that E. Puts reviews then as one lens in his compendium, and notes "....differences, while measurable, will be lost in everyday picture taking"). A subtle change in back-focus to clear the SLR mirror and boost the focal length 5mm.

Or let's put it this way - I wouldn't swap from R to M or vice versa just to get one or the other.

In 2003 my Leica rep said that Leica considered the 75 'lux to be the best lens in the M-line. At the time, likely true.

Andy--there was actually a thread on this (recently--I'll try to dig it up) but according to people more knowledgeable than I am, the lenses are actually quite different designs, though cut from the same design goals (and both designed by Mandler).

In shooting practice I do see a number of differences between them and I while I love my 75 Lux, I love the 80 R Lux even more.

Might be crazy, and for Erwin, they might be close enough, but to me they're ever so slightly but significantly different beasts.

Hey Jeff--that's the thread on the 75, but I was actually thinking of a thread that Ben and I had a little while back on the 80 :)

Well, if it's not this one...http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/95508-80mm-summilux-r.html then my research is complete.:)

Jeff
