Whatever happened to keeping threads relevant to their forum section?

Not that I'm a massive stickler for the rules, but I'm just wondering what happened to keeping the sections separate and relevant.

I do remember a time when anything even hinting at being not absolutely 110% relevant to the M8 forum was shunted off to the appropriate section, but now it seems like anything goes on the M9 forum. No-one cares anymore? Is it okay just to chuck everything in there on the basis that it's now the most popular section?

I personally think it's a pity - lots of information being hoarded which should and could be shared with others that don't have an M9 and don't congregate on that forum to the exclusion of everything else. I'm actually beginning to wonder whether there's any point maintaining different sections, at all? Just throw everything into the M9 forum.

A quick selection from the first twenty or so current topics:

RAID systems experience?

Why is the 50 'lux SILVER heavier than the BLACK?

Ken Rockwell on Summilux 24/1.4

Lens Hood on 35mm Summarit - HELP PLEASE!

Zeiss Lens Caps

What Lens Hood for 50mm Summilux?

Noctilux F/1.0 ?

New 35 lux?

Looking for Jono Slack!!

6 Bit coded adaptor rings- any one used these?

PS: I did consider posting this in the M9 forum naturally - where someone might see it...

There are some people in the digital forums - not all of the people I hasten to add - who have a "ghetto" mentality and can't see beyond the confines of their section. It seems to be mainly an M8 and M9 thing - you rarely see someone in the film section asking what's the best card to use in a digital M.

I'm sure Andy does his best, but there must be times when he feels like Canute.

Well I definitely wasn't meaning to point fingers at any moderators - my main grouse is with posters themselves who think along the lines: 'I have an M9, so therefore I'm totally uninterested in looking at any other section - waddya mean Leica make film cameras?'

I'd rather the whole forum was kept alive, informative and useful. This sort of ghetto-mentality leads to the site as a whole dying a slow death imo.

I try my very best to move threads to the appropriate sub-sections, but I can't be everywhere all the time.

I'm sure more members could try to be helpful by using the reporting triangle.

Thanks guys - I had a tidy up last night. I am going back to some of my Dutch roots, and have one finger permanently in the dam.

The triangle is a very useful tool, as all Mods and Andreas receive an email whenever one is used.

Not really That legend, as popular as it is abroad, is virtually unknown in Holland.;)

You'll be telling us next that you don't wear klompen every day.

Klompen are all wood, yellow, red or Delft blue and uncomfortable unless you have worn them all your life. The finger in the dike story is not only a legend it is a complete figment of the imagination, presumably originating from the Dutch tourist board to make dikes sound more exiting than they actually are.

Still the "Deltawerken" in the province of Zeeland is very impresssive.

Edit: maybe by now we need to move this thread to the bar?

Ah well, you see the OP can't be held responsible to where a thread will wander off. If that were the case, every single thread would end-up in the 'Is Film or Digital Best Forum'.

'Is Film or Digital Best Forum'.
:D

You forgot the other option "autofocus, live view, visoflex and similar novelties to embellish our next generation M with, my armchair analysis"

What is the best type of case to keep klompen in? Assuming that the Dutch members can agree exactly what klompen are made from.

I worked in Rotterdam for a month and found it almost impossible to buy Edam. Sorry to have drifted off topic. ;)

Not a problem the m9 caper/forum that section is for cameraholics and is not meant for people who are interested in photography

Oh, Imants! It was the M8 caper before Mani got there too (sorry Mani, that's totally unfair, but people used to say the same thing about the M8 forum...)

Look, I love the place, but the divisions here are dumb, though some are useful.

If I'm interested in the digital Ms for example, I'm probably NOT interested in film Ms... k?

If I am, then I would go to a film M section, even for a general query.

As for discussing lenses and other stuff (including where is Jono?) those might belong in the M9 forum, since owners of M9s (and to a lesser extent) M8s might actually be discussing performance on the M9 (or realizing that Jono published stuff on testing the M9).

Ok, so Ken Rockwell's comments could go anywhere, I guess, if they have to go somewhere, that is...:D

But seriously--back off on the "ghetto mentality" thing--I find that more offensive than the polylooks ads :) Why can't people click? Or search?

The site as organized isn't exactly a library science model of meaningful categorization. As a consequence, users have their changing interests and the site as a whole will not die. The latest camera sections are always going to attract more general interest stuff because more people are interested in newer stuff, and the broader non-categories like "Digital" or "Customer" will always be less used...

And where's the DMR / R10 category? I have to constantly rub noses with people who want me to adapt my R glass to my Nikon or be satisfied with an M9 (all the while extolling the virtues of a lately dumped Canon system). (just joking)...
