Advertisement Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Hi skay, Take a look here New M9 image numbers are high. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
swamiji Posted April 6, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 6, 2010 Read Page 160 of the manual. While your at it... Read the rest. P.S. Welcome to the Forum.... where all opinions are abused equally
250swb Posted April 6, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 6, 2010 Welcome skay. In relation to reading Page 160 of the manual (and the rest.....) I have, and I can't really see what the point of this advice is. Where is the answer in Page 160? Anyway, to re-assure you rather than make you think you are stupid, my numbering pretty well started in the 1009200 region when I look back at my first files. When it got to 1009999 it reset to 1000000. '100' is the folder, and the exposures follow. Why it starts high I can't remember, but I think somebody once explained it, but you are safe that it is normal. Steve
swamiji Posted April 6, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 6, 2010 Welcome skay. In relation to reading Page 160 of the manual (and the rest.....) I have, and I can't really see what the point of this advice is. Where is the answer in Page 160? Page 160 in the manuel referrers to the File structure. It talks about what the files are and can be named. How many files in the Directory, etc. Welcome, dear visitor! skay Posted April 6, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted April 6, 2010 Thanks for the reply. I did read this and suspected that it was working correctly. I just didn't remember my m8.2 with this file structure. One more stupid question; will the grip from the m8.2 work with the m9? I know I can just try it but I don't want to break something. swamiji Posted April 6, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 6, 2010 Will the grip from the m8.2 work with the m9? Yes, Thats the one I am using. There is no such thing as a stupid question. It's just that you have a good resource in the manual, It's best to start there. When you exceed the knowledge in the manual, then it's a good time to try here. gravastar Posted April 6, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 6, 2010 Also if the SD card you put in the camera had been used in another camera (your M8.2 for example) and had a "leica " folder on it then the new camera may pick up the last previous image number and start from there. d2mini Posted April 7, 2010 Share #9 Posted April 7, 2010 Mine started at L1000001.
swamiji Posted April 7, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 7, 2010 Mine started at L1000001. I changed mine so it started with L2000001, as my M8 was using the L1000001. There is another thread on how to do that.
adan Posted April 7, 2010 Share #11 Posted April 7, 2010 I thought I had carefully reformatted all my old M8 SD cards, but one slipped through so my shots have been in the 1060000 series since the early days. If you want to check the actual number of shots you've made (or that have been made with your "new" camera), the "unique image ID" in the EXIF data of each image, converted from hexadecimal to decimal, will tell you that. The "Programmer" version of the calculator that comes with every Mac can do it - or you can go to the Google home page and enter the number as "0x04EF (or whatever it is) in decimal" and Google's calculator function can do it. E.G. my most recent shot is 0x01DDB or 7,
Shootist Posted April 7, 2010 Share #12 Posted April 7, 2010 The reason the shot numbers have started high is because Leica, during there testing and adjustments of the camera at the factory, never reset/format the card/s they use. So with each successive camera they work on the numbering is raise. This has been a common problem with cameras that go back to the factory for repair/adjustment. There is a way to reset it to any number you want or to the factory default of L1000001. As to the numbering being reset back to that after you take a whole lot of images. You would need to take 9 million 999 thousand 9 hundred 99 images before that is supposed to happen. The folder number will raise by 1 after each 9999 images. So if you start at L1000001 and take 9999 images with the next image you take the folder number will roll over to L1010001.
The_hog Posted April 7, 2010 Share #13 Posted April 7, 2010 Well in my case things might be getting interesting. I'm currently at picture no. L9999680 Wonder what will happen when I reach L9999999 Will the camera go to L1000001 Or will it selfdestruct We'll see.

Not sure about the M9 but with the M8 once you reached the limit of the numbering system, L9999999, the camera would report something like "Can't record image, out of file numbers". At that point you had to reset the numbering.

I twice got my camera back (an M8u, after the update and after a sensorclean) with filenumbering starting at L999xxxx. A simple reset did it. Do a search in this forum on filenumbering and do not wait till you reach picture L9999999:eek:
