minhhich Posted April 6, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 6, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I was just wondering what type of black paint does leica use to paint their camera? Is it something special? Because I have some tiny speck of dust on my M8 bottom plate and I sorta wanna "spot healing" them . Not sure what they use and where I can get them from. Also that make me hate black paints, they are to get scratch too easily

jaapv Posted April 6, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 6, 2010 Anything you use will get marks - chrome or coating - so I would not bother playing around with paint brushes if I were you. Your camera just lost its virginity and you can view future dings and scratches with equanimity. I think it is some kind of polyurethane coating or similar, judging by the toughness of the stuff. Otoh if it is a manufacturing flaw I suppose you could get Leica to replace the bottom plate.
menos I M6 Posted April 6, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 6, 2010 "spot healing" treated camera gear is the one most annoying thing, I hate, to find out about a new second hand purchased item. Let the camera age in it's natural way and get over it - works best, as you otherwise would potentially end up spotting the camera more than your prints. wilfredo Posted April 6, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 6, 2010 Worn black Leicas are considered by some to be like a worn Black Belt on a martial artist. The more wear it has on it, the greater the halo of admiration. http://blog.ricecracker.net/2010/02/23/some-well-worn-leicas/
wparsonsgisnet Posted April 6, 2010 Share #5 Posted April 6, 2010 If you go to Home Depot, the Leica paint section is just beyond the hardware section.

minhhich Posted April 7, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted April 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mine is M8.2 and it is black paint. If it is black chrome then I much prefer:o
epand56 Posted April 8, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 8, 2010 The best way to prevent your M8/8.2 from scratches is to put it in a soft black pouch and leave it in a dark closet forever. Also leaving it on the dealer shelf works great But if you want to take pictures, than use it and don't mind the finish to be rubbed away.

Islandmike Posted April 9, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 9, 2010 I'm wondering how long it will take for the edges of my black M8 to wear (or if it will wear) and give that lovely brass patina that I remember from the M3s that came into the shop I worked in (in the late 1960s early 1970s, for part exchange by national press photographers. menos I M6 Posted April 10, 2010 Share #11 Posted April 10, 2010 I'm wondering how long it will take for the edges of my black M8 to wear (or if it will wear) and give that lovely brass patina that I remember from the M3s that came into the shop I worked in (in the late 1960s early 1970s, for part exchange by national press photographers. The black paint M8.2 will brass rather quickly on the edges: The black chrome M8 though less so, slowly lightening the black color on the edges. I guess, my black chrome M7 will not see any brassing, as long I live, with the occasional roll I use it for.
