JHAG Posted April 9, 2010 Share #41 Posted April 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) So the R50 is really the lethal poison, the ultimate remedy ? I take good notice. I did a series in Spain with the 180, very elegant and unique elderly people on the shore, smoking cigars under large hats in black costumes, barefoot. It's all on film and prints are superb, no time to scan it, but really the 180 was the lens for the job. PS : You're beyond recovery, hopeless really. Jaws Posted April 10, 2010 Share #42 Posted April 10, 2010 Only you can answer the question. How would anyone else know what will work for you? What works for you might be others' last idea of a good idea. I would personally take something much smaller and more general purpose, like 50f2 or 35mm. Small 50 and a 28 would give you lots of flexibility and weight the same as your 50 F1.... but you might be a ninja with that big 50mm and my idea might ruin you
Jamie Roberts Posted April 11, 2010 Share #43 Posted April 11, 2010 So the R50 is really the lethal poison, the ultimate remedy ?I take good notice. {snipped} PS : You're beyond recovery, hopeless really. (sorry everyone for the thread hijack ) Yes, I am beyond recovery--just like you, my friend For someone who, um, likes 50mm lenses (as we know you do!) the current R 50 is the ultimate, IMO. It's certainly my favourite 50 to date, and if I could get it on an M camera I would I'm sort of surprised you don't already have one! It's a paradoxical lens: optically appears as sharp and detailed, even wide open, as the M50 ASPH but has much of the contrast character (without the abberations) of a Mandler era lens to about f1.8... then it's like the R 180 in terms of contrast all the way to f8. Colour is also somewhere between the 80R Lux and 180 APO (IOW, perfect) It sort of never calls attention to itself under almost any conditions, which for a 50 is kind of ultimate achievement, no? On eBay this lens (E60 version) still commands about $3K, which is pretty astounding for a manual focus lens for a discontinued system! I'll never sell mine. I'd be more than happy to travel just about anywhere with that one lens... I just need an R10 to do it...
