X1 skin ailment

I have to report it with great sadness that my X1's "vulcanite" covering just started peeling away.

Somebody on this forum from SE Asia posted something similar very early on. My camera was with me this weekend in D.C., it was warm, but nothing extreme. I am pretty upset about this, it is something really cheap, should not have happened with a $2000 camera.

Well I took a deep breath and sent my X1 to Leica today.

I am saddened by the loss.

I guess I will have some time to try something else till it comes back.

Recently I received a Hexanon 1.2/50 lens. I wanted to try it out, but I only have a Leica CL. It will be interesting......

That big lens looks funny on the CL.

I have the same problem with my 1 month old X1. Out of the box I already noticed the edges of the skin on the back starting to peel. It can be pushed back in place but within a few hours it lifts up again. Obviously the adhesive used is not strong enough to overcome the stiffness of the skin on curved surfaces. This is a real shame and embarrassment for a $2000+ camera. My only real disappointment with the X1. I know that this is covered under warranty but I would really hate to send my camera back to Leica (probably for weeks) for something that I could most likely repair easily myself. Any suggestions as to what adhesive would be the best for this?

Would be best to send it back for a warranty repair just in case your own adhesive repair infringes the warranty conditions. My X1 lens bezel/annulus surrounding the front lens element started to lift off during the first week and I considered sticking it back on myself - but then thought better of it and decided to ask Leica to fix it - and they then replaced the camera within 5 weeks ie I had to wait 5 weeks for a replacement.

I sent my X1 for repairs today. I have three issues:

- skin is peeling loose

- battery door doesn't close properly when the battery is inserted

and the worst:

- the connection for the neckstrap has come loose on one side.

Hopefully it will be back soon as I am doing a photograpy course and am going on a holiday in three weeks...

In the USA, warranties cannot be invalidated by cosmetic changes made by the customer . So for some people who do not want to lose their camera for weeks or who are pretty handy , it may not really be worthwhile to send back.

That's what I'm thinking as well. Particularly if the glue that Leica will re-apply to my camera is the same they had on originally (very likely) and it too will peel sooner or later. I will contact Leica to see if by chance they will admit that they have a permanent fix for this problem which seems to be very common with the early release cameras. If they do, then I'll send the camera in, otherwise I'll do it myself. So, any suggestions on good quality metal to "artificial leather" adhesive???

I noticed this, when I started to stretch out the right hand side of the vulcanite covering, and you could see the pulling on one side at the Leica's red dot. I, very gently pulled back again toward the front. Once I installed the strap, this became of a lesser issue. Because I stopped grabbing the camera forcibly with my forefinger and thumb, as I have done for fear of dropping her; I did with my right hand, and you are really exerting a pulling effect forcing the vulcanite over the rounded corner towards the usb/sd card cover. In mine, it actually went over the edge. I do not have an issue today, may be the glue has now cured more??? And I do agree that this was very irritating. Leica should have used a pre-formed skin, rather than one cut from a flat stock, as shown in the video when someone shot at a tour of the factory in Solms. May be this is why a handgrip is offered as an accessory? At an added cost of course....

Was this really necessary?

I don't think barjohn would deny he rolls with the small group of folks who spend time questioning the X1, knocking the X1and whenever possible, steering potential buyers to another camera. I wonder if there is a list of other cameras that they work from or just Leica's?

Anyway, hopefully the skin ailment gets resolved.

It's really the danger of buying any item that is made with 1000s instead of by the millions. I'm worried my camera will have this problem while I am Vietnam. I'm worried I'll get boned by import duties if I have to send it back to Leica for repair. :(
