PayPerView Posted April 3, 2010 Share #1  Posted April 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I posted that I had received my X1 shorty after the M9 and am new to Leica. I also bought a 5D II within the same couple of weeks..plus lenses, flashes, etc.  I hastily tested the X1 and decided I didn't need it and put it up for sale on Ebay..But I had second thoughts after starting a project that needed a discreet size and the best ISO performance I could get. Exactly what the X1 would be perfect for.  Someone asked in another thread on the X1 that if the X1 is such a simple camera, then why do we have to 'learn how to use it".  Well, clearly because any camera needs to be learned and using it properly I believe will yield literally stunning results. No, I don't have any stunning examples of photography with it. I have just used it for simple outside tests but I am very very encouraged about this camera. Not only because of the large file size and image quality but because I like the menu structure and control layouts.  I do have my gripes that I and others have stated. Some probably will be fixed in firmware updates..Why on earth do we have to have a jpeg with a dng file mystifies me. The shutter and aperture wheels move far to easily. It's annoying and could easily ruin your shot in the heat of the moment.  I can't wait to use it with the Leica viewfinder that I will receive next week. Need a good wrist strap and half case and I will be set. I think I'll need an extra lense cap as I am certain it's going to get lost!  This camera is a sleeper in a way. I know that sounds funny as it's just about impossible to get but I am certain the more good photographers who get and use this camera the more we are going to be blown away but what it can do.  I just two days ago, wrote off using the manual focus, as I do not like the wheel to control it and it's endlessly slow BUT learning how to prefocus and setting up the shot, I think it's going to be just fantastic.  Thank god, the high bidder did not follow my auction guidelines and agreed to cancel the auction.  My X1 is not for sale...until maybe I get the X1.2 that is. Advertisement Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Hi PayPerView, Take a look here Thank God I didn't sell my X1!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ezc203 Posted April 4, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted April 4, 2010 I'm glad you changed your mind about the X1. It really is a stellar performer.
PayPerView Posted April 4, 2010 Author Share #3 Â Posted April 4, 2010 I'm glad you changed your mind about the X1. It really is a stellar performer. Â good word for it. stellar... Â I really did not give this camera a fair chance and feel stupid I was selling it so fast... It's better than I had hoped for in some ways... It's a pleasure to use.. I just need to figure out (if it's possible) to speed up the auto focus by perhaps choosing different modes...or refining technique...I think getting used to it will help speed it up as well. Â Wonder what is possible to change in a firmware update. Â Also as much as I make fun of the fact we cannot just shoot DNG only ...these jepgs look damn fine..In fact, I have to learn how to post process these files better as so far I am getting more noise with the DNG files and have not yet been able to get the smoothness of the jpegs. Â I am not great at PP and am using CS4...I do have LR but am resisting learning it...eventually I will I guess.
PayPerView Posted April 4, 2010 Author Share #4  Posted April 4, 2010 Here are a few from tonight..Very pleased wtih this camera if it's not already apparent...lol..  must..must learn how to process images from it better....Any specific tips for processing and reducing noise for DNG files appreciated. The jpegs are looking way smoother but that may be the nature of jpegs? I never shoot or use jpeg so I don't know. Welcome, dear visitor! jsrockit Posted April 4, 2010 Share #5 Â Posted April 4, 2010 Â Someone asked in another thread on the X1 that if the X1 is such a simple camera, then why do we have to 'learn how to use it". Â Well, clearly because any camera needs to be learned and using it properly I believe will yield literally stunning results. Â I didn't say if... I said it is a simple camera. I am a X1 user and don't see what there is to learn. If you have an M and a Canon, then there isn't much to learn with the X1.
Ecaton Posted April 4, 2010 Share #6  Posted April 4, 2010 Practicing mf on moving subjects with the X1. The good thing, there is no shutter lag. Welcome, dear visitor! peterb Posted April 4, 2010 Share #7 Â Posted April 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I said it is a simple camera. I am a X1 user and don't see what there is to learn. . Â I'd say, based on some of the examples posted here you need to learn what the camera is focusing and where before pressing the shutter. Â That said, I really like the girl jumping in the air and the woman lying on the bar.
jsrockit Posted April 4, 2010 Share #8 Â Posted April 4, 2010 but Peter, that is a very simple thing to do for the most part.

wda Posted April 4, 2010 Share #10 Â Posted April 4, 2010 Very good examples of X1 action photography. The first showing the leaping girl and watchful dog is priceless! Â I don't wish to prolong the debate over the wisdom or need for mastering a camera. Photographers vary widely in skill levels, determination, commitment, motivation etc. Some instinctively know want they want from a camera; others need time to explore. Â After three years with the Digilux 2, a colleague had never had the need to modify the inbuilt flash settings and was quite surprised when I did it instinctively. That is a simple example of how you can miss less obvious features if you don't spend time with the instruction book exploring lesser-known features. This forum is a great place to exchange these little gems of knowledge.

This forum is a great place to exchange these little gems of knowledge.  This camera is simple to use. Simpler and more importantly makes me WANT to know it inside and out...I find almost all point and shoot camera's that I've seen and used to be pretty complex but more importantly when you have a few camera's with different menu systems and controls...it all gets harder to sort out.  If I only used the X1, it would take me a shorter time to adjust to it and to get used to the slow auto focus than any DSLR I've used.  It's a joy to use...Took some pictures in the bright sun today...getting Leica Viewfinder wednesday...lol..
