andybarton Posted April 5, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted April 5, 2010 I wonder what Leica UK thinks about their dealers (as this person claims to be) selling stuff, in auction, on eBay with a start price at the retail price. Â Pretty shoddy, I call it. Â (Edit: they are authorised dealers. It's the dealer in Cambridge)
stunsworth Posted April 5, 2010 Share #3 Â Posted April 5, 2010 There are two bids for the same amount by the same person - zero feedback by the way. Â Why do people place multiple bids for the same amount? I noticed that myself when I've sold things on eBay.
Douglasco Posted April 5, 2010 Author Share #4 Â Posted April 5, 2010 Hi Andy I hope no one is daft enough to pay more than the retail price for it.
andybarton Posted April 5, 2010 Share #5 Â Posted April 5, 2010 So do I. Â "Hi. As per the listing it is UK stock and we are official Leica UK dealers. We also would never deal with Grey imports. Regards," Â Outrageous.
farnz Posted April 6, 2010 Share #6  Posted April 6, 2010 There are two bids for the same amount by the same person - zero feedback by the way. Why do people place multiple bids for the same amount? I noticed that myself when I've sold things on eBay. Steve,  They won't actually be for the same amount, they just look that way at the moment. (I'm not the bidder btw. ) It's what happens when you place a bid and eBay asks if you want to add a maximum bid. If you do, then the second (higher) bid will continue to show as the same amount as the first bid until the first bid has been surpassed, when the second bid starts to rise until it too is surpassed.  If you think about it, to do otherwise would make your second bid outbid your first bid, which would be great for eBay's bottom line but not so popular with the punters.  I think some bidders put multiple bids on to try to send the message "Even if you beat my first bid you'll still have to beat my second bid to win the item so you might as well not bother bidding." in the hope of putting potential bidders off. Many bidders simply snipe these days so the above rationale doesn't really work anyway.  Pete.
andybarton Posted April 6, 2010 Share #7  Posted April 6, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bidding has closed with someone paying nearly £200 over list.  One born every minute.  But, the actions of this Authorised Dealer are shameful. One to avoid.
wattsy Posted April 6, 2010 Share #8 Â Posted April 6, 2010 Campkins used to have a good pro dealership on an industrial estate down near the railway station but the city centre shop is like a marginally glorified Jessops. I was in there only a week or so ago looking to pick up a new BIllingham but was told they don't stock them because "they are too expensive". Interesting that they are putting new stock on ebay rather than satisfy the customers on their waiting list (I'd be surprised if they haven't got a list for the X1). Â There used to be a pleasant Leica dealership the other side of the market. It used to be half hi-fi and half camera shop (with the latter being mainly Leica). They disappeared a couple of years or so ago leaving just Crapkins and a pretty woeful Jessops (are there any other kind?) as the main camera dealers in Cambridge. earleygallery Posted April 6, 2010 Share #9 Â Posted April 6, 2010 Wouldn't it be awful if they were scammed by the buyer!
stunsworth Posted April 7, 2010 Share #10 Â Posted April 7, 2010 They won't actually be for the same amount, they just look that way at the moment... Â Pete, thanks for the explination. The first time I saw it happen I was worried there was some sort of scam going on - even though I couldn't think what.
dkCambridgeshire Posted April 9, 2010 Share #11 Â Posted April 9, 2010 I was in Campkins shop in Cambridge some years ago and a customer was collecting his copy of an irreplaceable family portrait which he had asked the dealer to copy from the original square print ... but to produce the copy with oval vignette added around the face. Â The dealer was holding the once oblong original print and explaining to the customer that unfortunately, after leaving the original print at the shop, the lab had taken a pair of scissors to the print and cut it into an oval before copying it! The customer was absolutely livid that the once square shaped irreplaceable original photo was now irrevocably ruined and cut into a jagged egg-shape. Â And AP subsequently published the story.
