If you search hard enough there is a 3rd party firmware for the 8/8.2 and 9 available.

Not a great deal of difference to the current leica offering but is reported to include:

Aperture Priority Revolutionary Intelligent Luminosity.

Fixes Optically Obscure Lenses.

Yes! Isn't it great news!?!?!

I've just checked the new web chat room dedicated to this firmware and learned that included in this update is an undocumented feature enabled by a sequence of three very rapid removals and replacements of the M8 bottom cover. This inflates the installed but unactivated (also undocumented) seals in all M8 bodies and any attached M lens built since April 1st 2008 When so activated, the M8 and any such lens installed will be water sealed for underwater photography.

However, it is sad to say that this third party vendor, as Leica so often does,

has given only a half measure.

This valuable feature, even when enabled according to instructions, provides water sealing to a depth of only 8 metres. However, to meet the huge demand for improved underwater performance from all digital M users, the vender promises an update, to be issued no later than April 01, 2011 that will enable reliable performance to a depth of not less than 30 metres.

Regards from the bottom of

the test tank...

Sam

Apparently, according to what they said about the firmware, this morning, you can switch the sensor to X-ray setting.

The ensuing images are supposed to be about the same as the new airport security cameras if the subject has thick-skin, otherwise internal organs are clearly revealed.

I downloaded the firmware this morning and installed in my M9. Was surprised that the camera recognized it right away and it installed just like the Leica FW. I did take note that even with the camera off, the red led on the back flashes three times when the shutter button is pushed. What really pleased me the most is that it now automatically detects my pre ASPH 35 1.4 lens.

Here is the download site:

Come, come. what is this about M8.2 and M9 only?

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I tried and it seems to work fine on my ancient M8 too.

But the waterproofness may be a few feet less.

Now I am going to try it on the M5.

If that works then the CL.

Too bad I no longer have the Voigtlander Vito.

I was going to try it on an M3 but I can never get those stupid USB to Serial dongles to work right. Let us know how you make out...

Notice the date it was posted: 1st of April ... ? Yep, it was an April Fool. :p

(Did you manage to download the software that's hidden in the Rick Astley video clip from the link in 3rdtrick's post below?)

Pete.
