I thought it protruded too far into the camera and would hit something in the M9. Then I read this on Rockwell's site "50mm f/2 SUMMICRON with close-up setting (a.k.a. dual-range, 1956-1968, codes SOMNI and 11 918). Everything works great in both focus ranges, however an internal obstruction unique to the M9 prevents this dual-focus-range lens from focusing any farther away than 4 meters (12 feet). Use any other 50mm lens, or the 90mm f/4 MACRO ELMAR-M instead." This implies I could use the 50 DR with eyes on the M9 in the close focusing range, which is hat I would want to do. I'm getting a 50 DR tomorrow primarily for film use, but I'd love to be able to try it on the M9. innerimager Posted March 30, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted March 30, 2010 Thanks Jaap- So, if I set the lens to 1 meter before I mount it, (I thought it was supposed to be set to infinity before mounting the lens to all M bodies), and then put the eyes on it, I'm good to go for distances 1 meter and closer? Rockwell is someway unprecise... the skirt issue is not "unique" of M9: onto M8 is the same. I traded it and missed it's look. Decide to get the DR For the close focusing and even though I wish it had full use on the M9 Im glad to have the DR just for close work on the M9. M9n Posted April 3, 2010 Share #11 Posted April 3, 2010 Hi innerimager, Interesting post. I dug out my DR and tried it on my M9. I mounted OK after first ensuring it was set to close-focus position. However, when I tried to attach the eyes onto the lens it would not push home. Of course it then prevents the DR from going into the close focus range. There is a half round peg on the rear of the eyes which locates snuggly onto the top plate of my M2. On the M9 it clashes with the top of the rangefinder housing. Did you remove this peg on your eyes? And if so, how much of a problem was it to do so, preferably without damaging it! innerimager Posted April 3, 2010 Author Share #12 Posted April 3, 2010 Hi M9n- You need to put the lens into the close focusing range before sliding the eyes on. First attach it to the M9 set at say 1 meter. Then pull the lens and it will create enough space to turn into the close focus range, that square tab will move over the alignment arrow. After the lens is set to the close focus range, the ball bearing allows the eyes to slide on. You must take the eyes off and reverse all above before removing the lens. That black spacer does not hit against my M9, but it may on yours. If so, you'd have to remove it. For instance I will remove the one on mine in order to use it on my M5, cause the spacer definitely hits against the taller M5 body. But I bet you'll be able to get the eyes on your M9 once you first put the lens into the close focusing position. best...Peter Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
