RoRoRoPa Posted March 30, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, since I got my M9 - my first digital M - I've been thinking about coding my 3rd party lenses. I assume that the M8 codes for particular lenses do not necessarily suite them on the M9. But how about firmwares? Could it be the case that with future firmware releases a lens that is performing well with a particular coding would need a different coding for improved performance? Or is that scenario more a hypothetical one?
Advertisement Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Hi RoRoRoPa, Take a look here lens coding of 3rd party lenses - firmware dependent?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted March 30, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 30, 2010 No- the coding is 100% universal. However, it turned out I miscoded my ZM Biogon 21 - I had it as the Elmarit asph, and on the M8 that was OK, but on the M9 I found the proper code was the older 21 Elmarit, and that works as well on the M8. RoRoRoPa Posted March 30, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted March 30, 2010 Thanks for the info. Actually I'm working on a small interactive database for lens coding to make life easier for the digital M community. I think I'll revise the database and remove the firmware releases. Now you got me thinking if I should also kill the differentiation between cameras.
chris_tribble Posted March 30, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 30, 2010 Don't forget that the framelines cam / rear-plate on the lens is part of the story. With some lenses (eg Zeiss 18) you have to make sure you get a rear-plate with the right cam if you want the coding to work.

euston Posted March 31, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 31, 2010 There is already a complete code database on this forum. It will be found via the Search facility. The existing database has eluded my attempts to find it via the search facility. Can you offer a clearer clue to its whereabouts or, better still, the URL? barcoder Posted March 31, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 31, 2010 Lens Coding - Leica Wiki Our wiki has a wealth of information. We should all be contributing to and advocating for it's use. I've updated the 35mm Summicron wiki page and lens coding page to link back to each other. More changes are obviously needed.
euston Posted March 31, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 31, 2010 Lens Coding - Leica Wiki Our wiki has a wealth of information. We should all be contributing to and advocating for it's use. I've updated the 35mm Summicron wiki page and lens coding page to link back to each other. More changes are obviously needed. Thanks, Barcoder, this is what I was looking for as it is of some help with 3rd party lenses (which is where we came in). I did visit the Leica Wiki but failed to find this page. I just browsed. If I had used the the Wiki search, I would have found it. You're right, the Wiki is a valuable resource - well worth promoting more actively. Thanks also to the other respondents but the off-site resources you cited were already familiar to me. In his message andybarton referred to the database as being on this forum. It was the forum search facility that I tried unsuccessfully. Could andybarton confirm that this Wiki article is the database he was referring to or is there another one that deals specifically with the coding of 3rd party lenses? I ask because the forum search facility doesn't search the Wiki contents, as far as I can tell.
