barcoder Posted March 29, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just wanted to share a picture I made of what the frames would be for the 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, and 135mm lenses on a Leica M9. To me the 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 90mm lenses all seem very complimentary to each other. I used the Viewfinder Standard iPhone app to make this picture. I own a 35mm Summicron and I think my next lens will be a 90mm followed by a 50mm based on this image.
Advertisement Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Hi barcoder, Take a look here Frame lines for the 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, and 135mm lenses on a Leica M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
adan Posted March 29, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 29, 2010 Where was this iPhone app when I really needed it? I went through about 20 years of numerology trying to find the "ideal" lens spacing, not unlike the hero of the movie "Pi" who fixated on Fibonacci series. Found some nice combos that way such as: 1:4:7 (135, 35, 20) 1:3:5 (105, 35, 21) 1:3:5:7 (135, 50, 28, 20) With film Leicas I settled on 21, 35, 90, which is again where I am with the M9. Not as numerically neat - but a nice visual spacing nonetheless. (A 75 creeps in in place of the 90 if I need the extra f/stop).
lumberjacksr Posted March 30, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 30, 2010 It is very helpful to new users of the Leica M9.
Ed_K Posted March 30, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 30, 2010 Thanks barcoder, does the application has a setting for 75mm by any chance?
charlesphoto99 Posted March 30, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 30, 2010 Saw a thing about this iPhone app the other day. Not really sure what the difference is between it and the frameline selector you already have on your Leicas. Maybe somebody could enlighten me. cidereye Posted March 30, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 30, 2010 Saw a thing about this iPhone app the other day. Not really sure what the difference is between it and the frameline selector you already have on your Leicas. Maybe somebody could enlighten me. I guess the whole point is that on the M9 you cannot get all the framelines up at once to show the differences in VF display of each. This ap display would show any potential purchaser what area of the VF they would be using for each focal length of lens.
larryk34 Posted March 30, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Any chance you could produce another photo with the framelines besides a ceiling fan? I don't think I've ever taken a picture of a ceiling fan. Seriously, say a simple street scene with something further in the distance to give us a better idea of the trade-offs. I was in Amsterdam once with only my 50mm lens (thought I brought a 35mm) and quickly discovered that I had to back all the way out of the main square down a side road to get a wide enough shot. barcoder Posted March 30, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted March 30, 2010 edkwan, it has the 75mm lens listed. You can also specify custom focal lengths. larryk34, I will try a street scene today. If weather permits a landscape. Any requested lens combos?
Leicaiste Posted March 30, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 30, 2010 I am a bit surprised to see how close the 75 and 90mm frames are from each other. Welcome, dear visitor!
