Philip Freedman Posted March 28, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 28, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a tabbed Summicron 50 (IV) made in 1980 with the round slotted clip-on lenshood 12538 which I use on my M9 but find the lenshood rather cumbersome and I think (or maybe just imagine) that it makes the camera more noticeable when used for street photography. Does anyone know if the small round screw-in hood 12550 made for the 50 2.8 would be suitable on that lens or would it cause vignetting? Thanks Philip
Advertisement Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Hi Philip Freedman, Take a look here Small lens hood for 50 cron. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
giordano Posted March 28, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 28, 2010 You can be sure that the smaller hood won't make the camera less noticeable. Quite the reverse: use a big enough hood and they won't realise it's a camera you're pointing at them;)
lct Posted March 28, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 28, 2010 ...Does anyone know if the small round screw-in hood 12550 made for the 50 2.8 would be suitable on that lens or would it cause vignetting?... Tried it once many years ago and it did not cause vignetting if memory serves but it hardly protects the lens against anything i'm afraid and can ruin the filter thread of the lens in case of drop or bump. So does the rubber hood of the Summicron-C 40/2 to a lesser extent though due to the rubber. It is quite elegant and unobtrusive but it does not fit 39mm filters and series 5.5 filters touch the first element of the lens. The B+W rubber hood is bigger and somewhat ugly. Fits perfectly 39mm filters though. All in all i prefer the regular clip-on metal hood personally but it's just me.

I always use the slotted lenshood. Why, because it not only protects the lens, but it helps me also to keep my fingers away from the front of the lens. Sometimes I have the urge to omit the hoods. but then suddenly a finger becomes visible in pictures. The 35mm and even the 50mm Summicron are small lenses.
