sakthorp Posted March 27, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 27, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm relatively new to Leica gear so please cut me some slack. I've spent the better part of a half hour researching, er 'googling' Leica M lenses. Apparently my 'google' skills are poor as I am unable to obtain information on the dating of M lenses. I have ordered a used Silver 50mm 'Cron. Serial No. 393XXX. Just curious if it's coded for my M9. (The retailer is not available until Monday morning) I am also interested in obtaining a 75 Cron, so I would like to educate myself with used inventory. I realize I am in the company of seasoned veterans, please be kind ~ Stephanie

rickp13 Posted March 27, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 27, 2010 welcome, stephanie here's the source for a list of current and older lenses which can (or cannot) be coded for the m8. use it just as a reference. you should already have a list of lenses which the m9 can recognize, i think. good luck rick p.s. in addition to googling, you can also use the search function on this forum. lots of good leica info for you already discussed x-zillion times. Have a look at Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Lens Compendium as well. leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Pages - Leitz and Leica Lens Compendium This site gives you the exact year of manufacture of a particular lens by entering its serial no. and then clicking on "Interroger la base" Summilux - Numéros de série

jaapv Posted March 27, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 27, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Unless somebody had it coded, it won't be - this is a pre-M8 lens. Which is not a problem. You can either: 1. use it uncoded - there will be no detrimental effects on image quality with a 50 mm lens. 2. leave it uncoded and select it in a menu in the camera 3. have it coded by either Leica or one of several third-party workshops. sakthorp Posted March 28, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted March 28, 2010 Jaap, I would like the focal length in the EXIF data, so I will dial in the lens manually on the M9. I am curious as to how a uncoded lens affects image quality with the wider lenses? Is there some sort of in camera correction(s) for distortion or vignetting of the wider lenses?
