andalus Posted March 26, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes, I know I am going to get some kind of freebie for Lightroom (my M9 arrives Monday or Tuesday) but is it LR 2 something when we all know LR 3 may be released in the next month or two? Would it make sense to wait till LR 3 is out to register for this product? Would one get LR 3, or is it simply the case that one goes ahead and grabs LR 2 and then will have to upgrade to 3 and pay the upgrade cost?
Advertisement Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Hi andalus, Take a look here re new M9 and Lightroom for free.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
msk2193 Posted March 26, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 26, 2010 You might want to call Leica; it is very likely that you will get to upgrade at no charge getting the fully licensed version so close to the release date of version 3.
dfarkas Posted March 26, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 26, 2010 The M9 doesn't come with a Lightroom install CD/DVD. When you register the camera in the Owner's Area on the Leica website, you get your LR license code. This is good for whatever version of LR is current (which you download from Adobe's website). Therefore, my suggestion is to download LR 3 Beta 2 for free now, use it until LR 3 final is released, then use the code to keep using it. If you use the code for LR 2.6, you will have to pay to upgrade to LR 3. David
250swb Posted March 26, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 26, 2010 If you use the code for LR 2.6, you will have to pay to upgrade to LR 3. David This isn't yet known for sure, but I have talked with Leica UK about this and they say upgrades to LR3 from LR2.6 will be honoured. The case I put was that there is a significant improvement coming in ACR with LR3, and unlike manufacturer software where you'd see all Canon users (say) get the improvements in processing (if you used Canon software!) there would be a slow and fast lane develop for M9 users. Those with the old software would be disadvantaged with poorer image quality for being early adopters, not to mention a two tier 'quality' divide. The Leica guy said they understood this point and it would be addressed. Of course the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Steve
andalus Posted March 26, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted March 26, 2010 Thanks David Farkas. Thanks Steve. I have downloaded LR 3 Beta/ I will not use the registration "code" that comes with my M9 in three days until LR 3 is released in non beta form. I guess this makes sense. Anyone else KNOW whether Leica/Adobe will honor a free upgrade from LR2 to 3 for recent, like current, M9 buyers????
vanhulsenbeek Posted March 26, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 26, 2010 I see no reason why Leica should not honour upgrades for all users. The M9 did not really hit the market before 3 months ago, and L3 is only one month away. Any software buyers who purchases software 6 months before a major upgrade deserves the next version for free. Or, like in case of C1, the next two upgrades.
andalus Posted March 26, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted March 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just spoke with Dave Elwell at Leica in NJ He claimed that if you get an M9 now and register and get LR 2.6, you will have to pay for upgrade to LR3. He said it may be advisable to wait and register after LR3 is out. So... download the beta and use it. don't register new M9 now. register and get LR 3 when it's out. You can still register your M9, without downloading LR. Registering your M9 on the Leica website does not automatically trigger the LR license code. In order to get the license code for LR you have to enter the TAN No. on the back of the registration booklet, the code is then sent to you via email. So you can register your M9, wait for LR3 to be released and only then request the LR code. https://owners.leica-camera.com/index.php/offers/adobedownload

microview Posted March 27, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 27, 2010 Does anyone find the LR3 beta significantly superior to 2.6 with M9 DNGs? And in what way?
sakthorp Posted March 27, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 27, 2010 Drats.... I registered and got the 'code' emailed to me but was thinking that as long as I didn't use it I'd be able to use it to activate LR3. I will still try, who knows.... it may work? If not, I'll just lay out the $99 for the upgrade. You can still register your M9, without downloading LR. Registering your M9 on the Leica website does not automatically trigger the LR license code.
