Just got an e mail from David Farkas. He's taken my MP in trade, cutting the cost of the M9, a grey one, which he says he's going to be shipping out later this week or next. I am a bit in shock. My first digital camera, but one which will go well with the Lux ASPH 50, the 24 3.8 Elam, and the 135 Telyt.

So...what do I need to know aside from what the manual will say?

Will I need to clean the sensor right away, and how to find out whether? What's the best way to know if dust or other crud is on sensor?

What is the best way to clean sensor, if necessary. I presume something like "dust aid". I don't want to get in to using liquid swabs if I can help it.

Best memory card? 16 gigs will do, I think. Once it's in camera I think it'll stay there, and I have a Mac Book Pro, so I presume I can download pics with USB cable?

Sorry for all the questions. Any answers appreciated. This is all new to me. But I am excited!

Is this thing good good at least 15k snaps? Will it last several years for this mostly amateur photographer (aside from shots to go with some journalism from time to time)?

The camera will be in a Luigi half case with a hanging flap. Do I need a screen protector? I have one, but maybe I don't need it. (I'm careful with cameras.)

Anyway, what a great forum!

On new FW 1.116 both PTP and Mass storage setting on M9 should work correctly.

  1. I'd recommend a couple of 8GB Sandisk Ultra rather than a single 16 GB - eggs and baskets come to mind. I'd also recommend a Giottos screen protector. Costs little and gives peace of mind...
  2. re the half case - it does increase the bulk of the camera in the hand. I use a Mr Zhou half case (VERY good value) when I know I'm going to be "wearing" the camera for long periods, but I prefer the feel of the camera undressed...
  3. Depending on your preferences get Lightroom or Aperture. I'm a Lightroom user (and LR3 is going to be very very good M9 files IMHO). If you're not used to digital imaging, then Michael Reichman's LR tutorials might be useful.

Whatever - have fun!

The shutter will last at least 150000 actuations, the rest far more . It will be supported by Leica for at least twenty years

I realy start wondering how much Leica pays you for promoting their products with so much enthousiasm on the forums :D

Well, Han and Ian, the twenty years come from Leica - Let's see if they are true - European consumer law requires ten, anyway, and the shutter is a development of the shutter of the R8/R9, which is known for such numbers. So what is so strange?:confused: If you don't want the OP with 15000 actuations and three years life expectance to be reassured, so be it.

Unfortunately, Bill, you have it exactly right.:(

My grey M9 had dust on the sensor right away. The Leica tech in NJ told me to be sure that my old lenses were dust free. I started blowing out the lenses - after doing two wet cleanings on a very dirty sensor - and everything has been mostly fine since. The Leica tech said the camera can be sent to them for a free cleaning anytime. I asked how they do it and he said air first (theirs is filtered I believe) and always a wet cleaning. Don't get freaked with every piece of dust, it is very easy to eliminate most of it in PS4 - as in the image below - it's the wormy things that drive me nuts.

My two cents...

1) Buy a spare battery.

2) The wb balance isn't always accurate (it will run 1,000k cooler). Don't freak. It's easy to fix in post in either Photoshop or Lightroom. I prefer Photoshop (I'm using CS3).

3) I know the DxO tests are rattling everyone, but the files are way, way sharp. The camera really takes advantage of the Leica glass (which was the point). Having said that, I primarily shoot DNGs, though the "vintage black and white" setting is pretty cool and the jpgs set to high color saturation look like pastels.

4) If you're lenses aren't coded, I made a little "cheat sheet" of the correct settings and taped it to the bottom of the camera.

5) I've had zero problems with Sandisk cards. Buy them.

From one M9 newbie to another (and a David Farkas customer)...

1. My M9 (black) came through with a clean sensor. I will eventually use an Arctic Butterfly to clean it; Sensor Swabs as a last resort.

2. I have been using Sandisk Extreme III Class 6 16 GB Cards; they work flawlessly.

3. I"m not sweating the 15K shutter spec.

4. I used a GGS 2.5" LCD Optical Glas Screen Protector. $4.50-15 on the internet. Works great.

Enjoy, and good shooting,

JIm
