Something I realized today (may or may not apply to anyone, but wanted to share my feelings):

I love my X1 so much, it's gonna replace my M8?!?! I'm been toying with the idea of having the X1 as my only digital Leica. Trading in the M8 for another film M.

Opinions? Suggestions? Ideas? Criticism?

Beeing a proud owner of a Leica X1, I understand the LOVE part... but the M8 still is a great companin to the X1... of course a M9 would be better :D

Well I mean, the M7 (which is my leading candidate for replacing the M8 right now) is also a good "companion" for the X1. And in some ways, it's even better.

Of course an M9 would be tasty, but my M is really my "process" camera. I shoot it not because I need to, but because I want to enjoy the "calming effect" on photography, if that makes sense?

Plus, getting the M7 with aperture priority mode will really cover any "speed" loss going from the M8 back to film.

I'm really on the fence about this one. I really love my M8. It's my first Leica and I have that... attachment to it.

Life is just so full of tough choices. Wouldn't it be easier if Leica only made one camera and one lens? :p

Right now my X1 is my only digital camera, and I'm very content. I'm lusting after an M9, but it would be a companion to the X1, not to replace it.

Haven't had the urge to go back to film. Probably because it's been 15 years since I've shot film, never processed it myself, and it never really "captured" me. I really got into photography with digital cameras.

It finally arrived. I ordered the X1 on February 1 and Pop Flash Photo delivered it on May 11.

The autofocus and handling speed of the X1 are not as bad as its reputation. I think the focus and shutter times are about half the D-Lux 4. The only time the camera struggles is in extreme low-light conditions. And that's fine. I realize this is not a Nikon D3. In normal daylight or decent indoor lighting, the speed is better than most other compat cameras.

The menu layout is great - simple, intuitive and easy-to-navigate. Why is this so difficult for the other camera manufacturers?

The camera is small - almost too small for my hands. I put the handgrip on order yesterday.

I already had the Voigtlander 35mm viewfinder on hand, so I'm using that to shoot to with the X1. But when using this viewfinder, it seems to shoot just a hair too low. I may have to plunge for the dedicated Leica viewfinder (if it ever comes available).

My only complaint, and it's been mentioned numerous times on this forum, is that the dials are too loose. I like to shoot aperature priority and at first my right thumb kept shifting the aperature dial by accident. I then had to consciously re-position my thumb between the aperature and shutter dials to keep this from happening.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the X1 and have no regrets.

These are JPEGs from the camera, set on High Contrast Black & White:

It does for me' date=' it's impossible to see the LCD in bright sunlight -- but our light is a lot brighter and more contrasty than some places. If you are shading the screen you are not looking at the subject. Separate optical viewfinder is the way to go.[/quote']

Well in the desert here....it also represents a significant challenge with dr when wishing to shoot through the day. Both are particularly challenging for myself as a beginner, the light was more kind in new york heh.

I have just tried out the X1 and am impressed with the camera. These snapshots significantly beat the IQ of my beloved Panasonic LX1 and avoid the cost and demands of multiple lenses and weight of an M8. I like the 35mm perspective which appears generously wide angle.

The only thing missing is having enough money to purchase. WIth little preparation or time I got these shots. I shot them in raw and processed through Photoshop using standard adjustments. The third shot was manually focused. The detail and sharpness is good. Remember these are 67mgb tiff shots compressed to 25% jpegs for emailing!

I am picky but I like them. It clearly is an outstanding snapper. Though I wish it had some of the German build quality and robustness of an M6/7. In some ways the Panasonic LX1 has a better qualitative and aesthetic feel.

The Panasonics, such as the LX3, have a beautiful look and great build quality as far as I can tell. But the X1 has a very different look and "build quality" (whatever that can mean), like a real Leica camera, suggesting a lot of hand-made qualities, whereas the Panasonics are very machine-made in appearance.

The X1's build quality is just fine for the average user. I've banged it around a lot and it still has no dents, scratches, etc...even on the LCD. I like that it is light and not as heavy as the M series. If it were as heavy, I may as well carry a M.

I've handled a lot of cameras, large and small, including Leica M4, M6 etc. But I have never felt anything so heavy for its size as an M8 that someone handed me once. It would be interesting to read about exactly what it is that makes that camera so heavy.

Greetings

Outstanding images.

They all seem to have that iconic "Leica glow".

Can you share your camera settings and post processing workflow.

Please post more images from the X1.

Thanks.

When I think I am annoyed, I get something like this - which for my skill level, makes me smile. I've never shot a baby before, literally, ever. Not sure I am in love yet.. i'll have to pick some brains here, but I am well in like.
