Okay, 1500 pictures later and I don't want any camera else :) I get so many responses from people about the quality of my photo's. Not only because of the IQ! I think also because I have looked good for the right composition. With my former camera (Nikon D200 with a lot of gear) I always had to think about settings, what lens should I take, flash or not, etc. What is the life now easier and pictures are much better! :D When you want look at my daily blog: http://www.blipfoto.com/damnsharp

It may sound dumb, and it's been said before I'm sure, but it really is possible to get high-quality photos that you might have trouble with using a large SLR and big lens, just because the X1 looks so innocuous. People don't feel intruded on so much.

Indeed, especially this is a great advantage I experience when I make portrait pictures. People often say: "have you made the photo already?". It's great the X1 is so quiet.

And with a viewfinder, it was not cheap, I have the same "feeling" then with my D200.

ijam, your third picture shows how good a Leica can be for environmental portraiture. Excellent examples!

I gave up waiting for anyone to call and say my name had finally made it to the top of their list to buy new. Fortunately a friend called to say he MUST have zoom and video for his blogging needs, so replaced his X1 with the V-Lux 20 and I jumped at the chance to have his gently used X1. I was a bit nervous but that totally went away with my first shot. I compared a similar shot to my 5D and FX-100 and the X1 IQ impresses the heck out of me!

As a component in my photo arsenal it is proving to be a wonderful walk around camera.

I love my X1!

But do you love it enough to trade an Olympus EP-2, a Panasonic 20mm f1.7 and a Panny-Leica 45mm for it? And why?

After I got the X1 (and also a Canon SX210), I gave away my G1 Pana with 14-45 and 45-200 lenses. Glad to see it gone.

I'm curious about the lack of viewfinder. I had an Olympus EP-1 and sold it after only a few months because I found I needed the viewfinder. I bought the EP-2 and have enjoyed it tremendously because of the viewfinder and because, coupled with Panasonic lenses in particular, it produces some fantastic images.. I am afraid I would miss the viewfinder if I were to trade the EP-2 for the X-1. Any thoughts from those who have used their X-1 for awhile?

I don't miss the viewfinder I had with the Pana G1 I gave away. Bright sunlight doesn't matter that much - easy to shade the screen. Viewfinders have problems with sunlight in some cases as well.

It does for me, it's impossible to see the LCD in bright sunlight -- but our light is a lot brighter and more contrasty than some places. If you are shading the screen you are not looking at the subject. Separate optical viewfinder is the way to go.

Exactly. I like to use both of my hands to hold my camera steady... not to shade something that should just work right in the first place.

I just did some tests outside, shooting in a 4 directions, including in the direction of the sun. No problems framing clearly at all. Here in Charleston SC we're at 33 degrees North, and since it's May 13, the sun is at approx. 77 degrees (90 is overhead). The current time of the photos I took is 14:15, or about 1 hour from solar azimuth.

Based on the foregoing (and it's VERY bright outside), I'd say that your problems relate to a more precise lighting problem with the sun hitting the screen "just-so". And that's a problem that's not unique to the X1 or LCD's. It affects everyone, just at different angles, as I described for viewfinders when the sun is hitting the other eye.
