I own a little netbook, an asus N10, it's small light, has good battery life and this is what I use for viewing images on the road. I hook it up to my jailbroken iPhone and it connects to the internet, it has all the PC features if you should ever need them, it has a 6 cell battery with 6 hour life and is about half the price of an iPad.

Why iPad?

Because netbooks are an even worse compromise than ipads honestly. They do absolutely nothing even adequately. The screen is cramped, the keyboard is nearly unusable, they are slow slow slow. Fwiw I own a dell mini 9 massively upgraded running os x/windows and an ipad. The ipad is getting sold as I mentioned, the netbook is only kept for the very very simple task of consulting calls and without doubling the price by adding a real and fast ssd it would be out of here.In reality, I'm just not willing to take the loss I would on the netbook. Were I in a situation to 'travel' with a netbook, i'd be in the same shape just using my iphone.

I wanted to love netbooks, but they are extremely annoying in nearly every way to me, as a lifelong technology enthusiast who makes my living in the field. There are much more capable machines out there with minimal weight gain. I'd take a macbook air ,or similar running windows, in a minute over a netbook. I do think the ipad is more convenient and a better device, but both have a way to go. Primarily the display resolution on a netbook makes any real work flow arduous. I'll be waiting for a revised macbook air or similar, they are almost there.. but just miss it for my needs.

I will say if you like netbooks, you should spend a couple of weeks with an ipad and see what you think. I think they beat netbooks in almost every way, but I just think the ipad needs more ram (and I mean RAM, not solid state memory drives) or a real page file.

I, we (my wife actually) has an iPad so I do have the chance to check it out. It's nice, I must say that and probably a brilliant piece of engineering as well and very stylish.... allas totally useless. It's hard to hold, harder to type something longish, depending on what you do it's not particularly fast, file format.... no memory enhancements possible etc.etc.

My netbook is... well a netbook, no style and not a brilliant piece of engineering either, but it has a full size keyboard, a 10" screen, a 60Gb ssd, an SD cardslot, and it run win7 with office 2010 without a problem, it does flash, network cable, proper security and with the SSD which I just added it's still cheaper than the cheapest iPad, I don't need to run iTunes which I hat with a passion.

The only downside I can think of is that their aren't any iFart apps for my netbook. The iPad apparently has a choice of these "fart" apps hmmm .... but this fact probably defines the target group of the iPad in a better manner than I could ever do.

All childishness apart though nobody from Asus and/or Microsoft dictates me what I can and can't do with my own computer, it's fully up to myself what I install, how I install and how I go about using it, not so with Apple.

exactly,i bought the Samsung N220 with the 11 hour batterie pack, in the beginning i wanted an ipad but i just couldnt write on it in the way i can write on the full size keyboard of a netbook, i am so much faster on a netbook then on the ipad. The netbook is more complete to me cause it runs windows, it has flash, USB ports, flash cards etc. i can just put in my memory card from the X1 and even Photoshop LR3 is running very good with the 2GB memory upgrade. now i want to buy a super small finger mouse for the netbook. I love my iphone and i have itunes installed on the netbook too but the ipad is just a product with a bit less sense to me, its like a big iphone. The price is also a lot higher, a netbook with windows7 and 250GB HDD is only 300 Euro and with a USB UMTS Stick for 20 euro it masters 3G too, not only Wifi. An Ipad Wifi+3G 64GB is how much ? :)

The X1 is expensive too but it produce the best IQ in its class while the Ipad can nothing really great, for me its a nice gadget or toy but a netbook can do better, at least the better ones on the market right now. that dosnt mean that i dont like the Ipad, its really funny to use it in its more limited field, i will probably buy one some day for use at home only for just surfing.

I get where you are coming from Jan. i have owned 2 differe3nt netbooks, the asus was a much better experience typing than the dell, the dell has a much nicer scree (still poor)

I think netbooks and ipads really cant replace a laptop at this point, so i keep waiting for the fast ultralight.

The walled garden of idevices does suck, which is why i only run jailbroken. there are a few apps i bought from cydia which really enhance the devices, that apple wouldnt allow. annoying.

this was typed on my mini 9, hence the horrible punctuation etc..i actually think the ipad in apple case is easier to type on.

There is always a price you pay for "small, Compact and reasonably good" with the X! the price is ...ehmmm actually the price itself. With the Netbooks it's the keyboard size and screen quality. I'm still amazed however with my netbook whenever I use it, it's reasonably fast and more than adequate for my mobile needs, and it really is quite compact. My fingers are roughly the size of Bavarian Weisswürstl and typing more than a few characters on an iPad, let alone any smartphone prove a lengthy and daunting exercise in my case.

I'm going to have to agree for the most part with Hooligan... netbook's vertical res is way too small for real use... too much scrolling... it just sucks. The iPad? I'll agree with Jan... it just isn't there yet. Typing on that thing is a bitch... it is a great reader though... and I'm sure games are fun. They both appear to be good travel machines, but I don't travel enough to warrant them. Sold both my iPad and netbook. Just keep using my Macbook pro.

I agree totally. My netbook I never use now. Tried it, found it not useful, I think great for fun though...

Having used Toshiba's Librettos for many years, the Netbooks were a great improvement in many ways, except one. Editing and viewing photos are not feasible on any Netbooks I've used so far because of the screen quality and bad colors. The iPad OTOH has a good screen with fairly accurate colors and a fast zoom in/out that's adequate for viewing details. Add to that good document viewing, audio and videos, and very useful Web browser and email services, and really useful apps, and no wonder people are buying so many of them.

  • 1 year later...
There has been so much negativity surrounding this camera on this Forum from the day it was announced. And I, for one, have had enough. Isn't it time we showed this beautiful little camera some love? (Plus, there's a "I love my...." thread for basically every other Leica, so why not? ;))

So, I will start by proclaiming for all to hear:

I LOVE MY LEICA X1

I know its not perfect and comes with its flaws, but I love it regardless! I love its size, I love its looks, I love its retro designs, but more importantly, I love its photos (and that's what counts!)

So, here I am, inviting one and all to come join me in the celebration of this lovely camera. Please, post comments, photos of or by the Leica X1; and let's relish in all the things it can do, and not concern ourselves with the things it cannot.

Just found this old thread...

all I can say is, two years later,

I LOVE MY LEICA X1!!!

I do not understand this or any other forum about not liking the X1. It, and the X2, are the current day iterations of the Barnack cameras like my IIIF.

The X1/X2 have it's own "quirkiness", if one wants to call it that, in that it is a simple camera. Simple to use, beautiful asthetics and amazingly good IQ. Just like the Barnacks. VF? Simple, put on the OVF just like the Barnack. Or the new EVF on the X2.

Real DNA there!

So it is not a NikoFujiCanoOlycon camera...if I wanted one of those, I would have bought one. I love the X cameras period!:D

Like Thorsten Overgaard has said many times, I am using the camera I love! And it is paying off handsomely as I start my next (two-year) project. What a great digital camera and a great complement to my M3 and IIIF.

  • 2 weeks later...

Two years later - it is the camera that I carry with me everyday. It is great travel camera that has taken some of my favorite shots - mainly because I have it with me.

For me, this camera is a classic.

Me too. The only thing I really don't like is that you can't put a filter over the lens. (I know about those long tubes that fit over the whole lens housing, but those are ugly and make the camera overly large. I've also seen the glue on filters. Don't like those either.)
