I assume the person on the right has much darker complexion that those to the left? In either case, my preference is to lighten the darker one just a little, since it takes my eye/brain a certain amount of time to adjust to the difference, which distracts me from the subject. Certainly that's a recommendation against accuracy, but I like to create a photo that doesn't require so much mental adjustment to see the details.

Yup, you are right, much darker. What's the best way to selectively lighten such a subject?

I really have no choice then to rearrange the 3 ascetics, they were sitting there and I smile and pointed to camera, they nodded and I fired away. haha.

Phancj - What program do you use?

I used photoshop elements on a mac, for this pic I chose the infrared field under B&W conversion and fiddled with the color sliders...must admit this is the first few times I have been trying conversion but so far not exactly satisfied with results, image seems to lack the "omph" after conversion...attached the color version so pls advise, and thanks!

I am looking at the image on a unbalanced screen at work, but it doesn't look too bad to me. It seems to have deep blacks, but no real whites. The original photo looks a bit flat too...and the main object looks a little backlit. I don't think your conversion is bad...it may just be the original image is just lacking that thing you are looking for. I think the B&W looks better than the color. Perhaps a little more contrast would help? I would start with one of your best images and try converting that. I have a feeling you'll like what you see.

The B&W is great - it has a quality much like a fine etching on grey metal. The color version not so good. You should try to bring up color and contrast to make the gold color pop out, without exaggerating any highlights. That's a good trick if you can do it.

You made a good capture, so you did everything right. The only way I know to make a change and not have any adverse effect on the overall image is to select the head only and just lighten a little.

Thanks guys...

Jsrockit- Yup, photo was taken close to 7pm in the evening, lighting wasnt optimal, but I liked the subject so I snapped a couple pics.

Babbob, will try to up the contrast, if I recall correctly I did not tweak the color image much apart from the quick sliders in lightroom/photoshop elements. I will also try my hand at lightening the single person's face on the right in the photo with the 3 ascetics.

Thanks guys, another thing I may want to look at is Nik silver efex, read a lot about it, maybe conversions in that software yield better results?
