peterb Posted March 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't want to be a killjoy but hasn't the X1 been around long enough already so that folks will now start posting shots on the various image portions of LUF digital image forum instead of here. I'm dying to see what the X1 can really do in your creative hands and react to your visions there as well as reading the massive analytical introspection of everyone's experiences with the low noise, AF speed, handling, OVF vs NO-VF, battery durability, dial feebleness etc. etc. here. (I'll probably get flamed just for suggesting such blasphemy.)
Advertisement Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Hi peterb, Take a look here X1 Images. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jsrockit Posted March 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 22, 2010 peterb, all you do is get dissed when you post images here, so would anyone want to post them? That said, I'll have some soon and it isn't my style to make a thread about them here. They will posted in the gallery section I guess. I'm in no rush though. peterb Posted March 23, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted March 23, 2010 Hey JS, Good to hear. My point exactly. The camera's been out long enough that the stories are starting to sound the same regarding how it feels, how it works, what's right with it and what's wrong with it. And of course typically the thread starts with a lame image that from what I can tell is hardly representative of the camera's potential. And it only makes the case worse for it. That's why I would love to start seeing what people can really do with this camera like they've done with all the other Leica's. (And other cameras that have some remote association with Leica )
jsrockit Posted March 23, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 23, 2010 I've stated from the beginning that the X1 is Leica's true entry level digital and that means many beginners / amateurs will likely buy it. I'm not a beginner, but I'm also not one to push a camera. It seems that if you do not push the X1 to its limits, people are not satisfied. However, many of my favorite photos from the past by the greats were not made by pushing a camera to its limits. I concentrate on taking the photos I want to take, not on scientific tests and what not. In due time someone will make something fantastic with the X1 that'll make the camera appear magical. That doesn't mean it'll be magical for the rest of us.

Ecaton Posted March 25, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 25, 2010 I believe people expect to much from the X1. There is no wow effect to its pictures. It's another digital camera with a really good sensor and decent lens, handicapped somewhat by quirks and warts as far as functionality is concerned. So what ever IQ it can produce, can be matched by some competitors' products as well. If compact size and highest possible IQ matter most, the X1 is among the best. If looks and pocketability play a role, the X1 rules. If however, versatility is added to the mix look elsewhere. For UI, and serious tool fans, go to Ricoh, the GXR A12 wins hands down. Ecaton Posted March 25, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 25, 2010 Before getting grilled for my previous post. Being in NYC last Friday I called two Leica dealer's, and lucky me, one just had received a X1 and I was there within 10 minutes to pick it up. So I have both, GXR A12 and X1. Welcome, dear visitor! jsrockit Posted March 25, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 25, 2010 Woah, Ecaton... which one do you like better? or too early to tell?
Guest stnami Posted March 27, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 27, 2010 The "better" will be............. we know that Ricoh are quite generous in firmware updates.........Leica well !!???
Ecaton Posted March 27, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 27, 2010 The "better" will be............. we know that Ricoh are quite generous in firmware updates.........Leica well !!??? To early to tell. The GXR's af is significantly faster (updated firmware), and about at the EP2 level. But when walking around, I switch often from af to mf and vice versa. The GXR requires one push on a button, done without looking at the camera (Fn setting), with the X1 it's via screen, cumbersome, slow, the moment gone. Manual focusing via lens barrel ring versus flimsy wheel. GXR lens is metal, built like a tank, has integrated lens hood a la summilux 50, filters can be mounted, has excellent macro (Ricoh standard). Switching from af to snap mode another excellent Ricoh option. X1 is the precious little beauty one handles with care, the GXR the competent tool which one can bang around, with great grip and far superior screen. And not to forget, a lens about half a stop faster. Both have a great sensor. Do I sound biased?
Guest stnami Posted March 27, 2010 Share #13 Posted March 27, 2010 ....... and the game will change as the 28mm lens becomes available........ but Leica has that silent shutter.............the noise on the GXR is still quite audible?
Ecaton Posted March 27, 2010 Share #14 Posted March 27, 2010 ....... and the game will change as the 28mm lens becomes available........ but Leica has that silent shutter.............the noise on the GXR is still quite audible? Am travelling and don't have the GXR with me for a direct comparison. Shutter is audible but never bothered me. One of the advantages of the X1 is its size and weight, which allows to carry it in a coat/jacket pocket or a small belt pouch. The GXR with 28mm might be similar size wise, but a little heavier. jsrockit Posted March 27, 2010 Share #15 Posted March 27, 2010 ....... and the game will change as the 28mm lens becomes available........ That's always been ricoh's strength ... that 28mm lens is nice. Wish I could find one for my M.

Douglasco Posted March 27, 2010 Share #17 Posted March 27, 2010 I already have, why not go to a store and try the camera out for yourself thats the best way to find out if you want the camera or not.

How does the high ISO compare in your experience? I find the shutter is almost silent on the GXR, just a faint click. In most ambient noise environments you can not hear it. Guest stnami Posted March 27, 2010 Share #19 Posted March 27, 2010 I already have, why not go to a store and try the camera out for yourself thats the best way to find out if you want the camera or not..... in most cases it can be found in aisle 14 in the local supermarket:p.........unfortunately it doesn't work that way in all places, here I had to rely on a acquaintance who bought it overseas as there are very few in the country. maybe you should indicate a link to these images of yours so len_gee may view them like these a bit out of focus but that's one of the acceptable quirks of the camera http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/118261-focus-imaging-2010-a.html http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/119211-chinese-girl.html Thanks barjohn

Sorry to say, but to my octogenarian eyes, they don't look very crisp ie. sharp. When I find a camera store near me that actually has an X1 in stock, I can take a few shots before I decide whether to take the plunge for the a X1. My hands are a bit shakey these days, so maybe the IS in the DL4 would be more of a benefit to me that the larger sensor in the X1. I reckon the X1 has better low light/high ISO ability than the DL4. To you, do images shot with the X1 have that legendary "leica glow" many X1 users seem to praise? Regards.
