plasticman Posted March 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Considering buying a film M again, but really the only thing holding me back at the moment is the horrendous price of color developing: around 300-400 sek per roll from most of the reputable central places (with medium-res scans). Anyone using mail-in or cheaper solutions that have scanning capabilities? Anyone out there who can be trusted to develop and scan for less? Thanks for any advice. Advertisement Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Hi plasticman, Take a look here Anyone in Sweden using film?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest dk_samurai Posted March 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 23, 2010 Yikes! You have got to be kidding me! Are you telling us that there's no pro lab in Stockholm that does it cheaper? My regular price in Copenhagen is 57 SEK if I buy coupons of 50 at a time. Surely there must be something equivalent priced in Stockholm... our two countries aren't that different. Sorry can't really help you, unless you frequent Copenhagen often, and in that case there's the #1 lab here: Laboratoriet i Nannasgade Aps Good luck finding a good lab! /David
Guest dk_samurai Posted March 23, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 23, 2010 ...with medium-res scans... Oops didn't read that part. Of course, if the lab are to do drum scans of each frame the price naturally spikes up. How much for only C-41/E-6 developing? If that's feasible, then look for a used Nikon scanner? /David

Unfortunately I don't think these are drum scans - they're only 5 meg files on CD. The absolute cheapest I've found works out to around 250 sek for a roll of color. At that rate, it works out to about one M8 a year! I love Copenhagen - been trying to persuade my partner that we should move there. Now I have one more reason... Xmas Posted March 23, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 23, 2010 Hi If you have a reasonable computer buying a mid range flat bed scanner allows you to do your own proof style scans, but perhaps not murals prints. The minilabs don't always do a wonderful job and if you are motivated the C41 spiral tank home procesing kits are still available, but you have to batch up the processing for similar economy. You partner will have to tolerate the lengths of film hinging in the shower cubical... If you want to go to monochrome the home processing is (even) easier. If you are into economy cine film short ends, in bulk loader. You can try and get an enlarger cheap from local camera club, as they go to digital, there is just nothing like a silver gelatin for quality, if you tone it for archival, it will be there 2110. earleygallery Posted March 23, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 23, 2010 SEK 250 = £25 approx. That's about what a pro lab would charge in the UK for process and low/med scan only (not drum). I typically use Snappy Snaps for process/scan (they are low res scans but fine for small prints or web use) and that comes to about £10 a roll. I don't bother with prints now, I prefer to re-scan the keepers and print those myself (I use an Epson top end flatbed which is fine). Have you looked for/considered the 1hr type minilab places or don't they have them in Sweden? If not then it would be better to post them to somewhere else - I'm not sure if Snappy Snaps do mail order (the shops are all franchises so it would be worth contacting a few branches to see). plasticman Posted March 23, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted March 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm gonna look around for a small lab - they must still exist. 25 quid really does hurt when you get used to seeing your pictures for free. wizard Posted March 23, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 23, 2010 The price you mentioned seems very high. Living in Germany, I send my color slide films to a pro lab (in Germany) by the name of Farbglanz and pay Euro 4,95 per roll, which equals something like 48 SEK. And I do not have to buy 50 coupons in advance. I do not need scans, so I have no idea what they charge for that service, but still. I am sure you could send them your films from Sweden, as there are no customs problems within the EU. Andy
underground Posted March 23, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 23, 2010 That's crazy!! My lab here in sunny southern California charges $8.99 for a 36 roll of Pan F or Ektar Negs, A proof sheet, and tiffs on CD.
Xmas Posted March 23, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 23, 2010 Hi Last time I looked the local supermarkets (Tesco) would do 24 hour dev only for £0.98 i.e. 1 GBP. Noel
Guest dk_samurai Posted March 23, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 23, 2010 SEK 250 = £25 approx. That's about what a pro lab would charge in the UK... That's INSANE! Both the UK price and the Stockholm price! To the OP: I have a friend who's lived in Sweden (forgot where) and I'll ask him tomorrow if he's knows of a good lab like the one in CPH. There has got to be a cheaper lab in Stockholm, anything higher than the 50 SEK price range is absolutely ridiculous. /David

I think the problem is that Sweden has swung very heavily to digital - very few people I know are still using film (in fact, I think I was the last person I know to do so) - Swedes are very, very much gadget people, so film labs are very few, and prices accordingly sky-high. @Andy I'll see if I can find Farbglanz online. @underground - if you think that's crazy, wait till you see how much a beer costs you in a bar here... Crimson have shaped up. They have always treated me nice an surely do process film nowadays. it´s not too expensive. 8mb jpegs and processing is SEK130:- (+vat) takes about 4 days. As mentioned above i have heard a lot of good stuff about Team Framkallning. But i do not know if they do scans also.

plasticman Posted March 31, 2010 Author Share #19 Posted March 31, 2010 Please share your thought on Team when you have been there. I strolled over to Söder this morning: slipped over on some loose gravel running across Hornsgatan and cut my knee; dodged past several drug deals going down on Mariatorget; watched a shoplifter resisting arrest on Skt Paulsgatan - all-in-all a normal Södermalm day in other words. The good part is, the person running Team was the nicest possible guy! Great personal service and a really friendly attitude, with much lower prices than anywhere else I've seen in central Sthlm. The only problem was that he didn't do scanning at the moment - but was considering his scanning options, as so many customers were asking for it. So definitely recommended if all you want to do is develop and print - but not great if digital is part of the workflow - for the time being at least. Focus Posted May 2, 2010 Share #20 Posted May 2, 2010 Hej! Kolla in Fotokungen på Kocksgatan med, bra och inte så dyrt, Rekommenderar att du skaffar en scanner, så kan du köra enbart framkallning och scanna själv
