andalus Posted March 18, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 18, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just sent my MP off to Dale Photo in anticipation of getting an M9 soon. Had to do it. I am certain some forum members will think me a fool for getting rid of the MP, but frankly, as much as for four decades I liked shooting slides all over the planet as a journalist and as just a traveler, my heir has NO interest in such and will welcome what I hope will become a well used M9 (by me) eventually. My rationale aside from the money issue is that if ever I wanted to go back to film, film Leicas will be easy to buy, cheaply. What counts with Leicas is the GLASS, and so the 50Lux ASPH, the 135 Telyt APO and the 24 Elmar 3.8 wait to be wedded to the M9. I did have a brief fling with a borrowed DL4 last year and I have to add I could not escape liking the convenience of digital capture. That was my first experience with a digital camera. Anyway, I have about 500 more slides to scan and then I will sell the Nikon Super Coolscan 5000...and buy and Epson 3880, if possible.
Advertisement Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Hi andalus, Take a look here Farewell...MP (even tho I loveya). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

SteveYork Posted March 18, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 18, 2010 Relax - Go with what your head and your heart tells you is right for you. Enjoy the new digital age. There's the problem. Head and heart don't always say the same thing. I've always felt that Leica bodies have more to do with the right brain then the left one.
chris_livsey Posted March 18, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 18, 2010 How refreshing to find a poster who doesn't want us to decide for him. I hope you continue to enjoy your photography, You are so right it's the glass that counts. But more than the film days, when they were just light tight boxes, in the digital age the box does have a sensor which makes it that bit more important in the imaging chain. andalus Posted March 18, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted March 18, 2010 thank you, all. Yeah, it was a little hard letting go of the MP, but keeping the glass made that letting go easier than it might have been. I would say: never sell Leica glass unless you are about to check into a homeless shelter...
Julian Thompson Posted March 18, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 18, 2010 You're selling your MP to get an M9 and I'm sat here tonight seriously considering letting my M9 go because I'm enjoying using my MP ! I'm sure that men and hobbies are a dangerous combination. Or maybe it's just that as we get older we're still children but our hobbies just get more expensive !! andalus Posted March 19, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted March 19, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's hard to let an MP go, but I am TIRED of film. Anyway, for the past 20 years only shot Velvia. Because it's a hassle getting stuff developed, paying for it, then scanning, etc. I want to try something different and heck, I can always go back and pick up an MP in future... earleygallery Posted March 19, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 19, 2010 my heir has NO interest in such and will welcome what I hope will become a well used M9 (by me) eventually. I'm sure said heir will enjoy using your M9 as a novely paperweight when the sensor dies or the batteries are no longer available. Film will still be in plentiful supply and hopefully they'll be inspired by your dead M9 to buy an old film MP.......
Guest maddoc2003jp Posted March 19, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 19, 2010 I would have no problem selling the MP (I sold mine and never looked back ) but the Coolscan 5000ED ? If you ever decide to give film a second try, you won't have any problem to buy a decent film M Leica but a decent scanner ....
Craftsman Posted March 19, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 19, 2010 Just put my Chrome .85 MP on ebay yesterday. Just not shooting much film anymore.
biglouis Posted March 19, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 19, 2010 Sold my chrome MP because I preferred my M7 (gasp!). However, I am now seriously thinking of selling the M7. I've really enjoyed film (again) for the last 6 months but once again the hassle of processing and scanning colour film is getting to me. frozenace Posted March 19, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 19, 2010 I'm still trying to convince myself to get an M9. Tried it twice in Leica Mayfair, right next to my MP, haven't yet decided.

I sold my MP some months ago - no regrets, but my Nikon Coolscan - never, because b/w film is THE media for me which I'll never will give up. Bessas and a ZI are ok for this. The Pen and the D300 on the other hand are very capable in terms of size and IQ in the digital corner. Bernd
andalus Posted March 19, 2010 Author Share #14 Posted March 19, 2010 Good points re the Nikon scanner. Yeah, since I think they are out of production, I will hang on to my scanner just in case. I'll wrap it up and put it away...when the M9 appears. Also keep Vuescan on my Mac, which I have found works very well with the scanner.

norgas_co Posted March 19, 2010 Share #18 Posted March 19, 2010 Looking like a number of film guys willing to give digital a try via M9, I'm slowly going that way too. If I were to ever sell my MP, would probably not want to have one again. An M4 I definitely cannot be without, and the M9 seems very tempting as the next venue to re experience our trusty old Leica glass. Must find a way to take it along with us though, as heirs would probably not care either way for our shabby old left behinds anyhow
andalus Posted March 19, 2010 Author Share #19 Posted March 19, 2010 M film cams will be a dime a dozen eventually, IMO. And, if not, you can still buy an MP, a nice one, with patience. Meanwhile, I think going to the M9 is gonna be great. Lots to learn, and fun doing it, too. I just hope it lasts. Also, consider. I expect the dollar to crater over the next few years. Funding crisis and all. I'd rather spend the money on an M9 than having it sit in a bank and earn virtually ZERO interest. It's either buy GOLK with the funds or the M9, and right now the M9 wins. However, if Leica came out with a 14 carat MP, I might go for that...talk about buying REAL money with FIAT money, and then being able to shoot nice pics with the money....
