I just bought a nice IIIf from a forum member (Thanks, Claus!) and he told me this camera was originally the property of a Leica employee. The name is engraved on the camera

Does anybody know if this was usual practice with cameras sold to Leica employees

and does anybody know (a very long shot, I know :() who Werner Kaps was ?

I remember that cameras were available to employees of dealers (this is Canada) at a discount. The cameras had to be engraved with the name of the employee. This was when I was in university and worked part time in a Montreal Leica dealership (Montreal Photographic Center). I never bought a camera, but I did buy a lens and an enlarger, and some other small accessories.

Werner Kaps - no idea.

BTW, Werner's colleague, Dr. Robi Hoot, who was responsible for the design of Leitz lens caps, was awarded several hundred Reichsmarks by E. Leitz, Sr., after the successful launch of the SOOPD aka as the Barndoor.

I read somewwhere that Dr. Hoot explained that he was inspired by his wife; I however do not comprehend (maybe a translation error(?))

It sounds reasonable to prevent selling for a profit. I guess the factory had the same policy.

He might well have been related to the Werner Kaps who founded this establishment in Solms:

translated via google, his surname gets mangled to 'Cape' in the process.

That is quite possible. Those a small communities and not too mobile. Whenever I am in Solms I'll wander into the shop and inquire.

Anyway, the camera is loaded up with Rollei 200 CN Digibase and ready to go on Friday :) To welcome it I got a mint Gossen Sixtomat of the same vintage for it ;)
