steed Posted March 13, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 13, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I stupidly let superglue drip onto the pentaprism of my black SL while stupidly repairing a crack in the plastic tip of the advance lever. Now there is a permanent appearing glue like smudge. Can anyone give me some advice on how to remove it. I hope there is no one out there as stupid as I am, and would love advice from someone smarter (shouldn't be hard to find). Regards John W

I guess you don't mean "pentaprism" but "top cover", and that the camera is black chrome, not black paint. If so, acetone should get it off. Stray acetone will damage all leather and most painted or plastic surfaces, e.g. the lacquer in the engraved lettering, the wind lever and the eyepiece surround. IOW it's at least as hazardous an operation as the supergluing that got you into trouble.
steed Posted March 13, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted March 13, 2010 you were right about the location-it is the top cover, and the stain irritates the heck out of me. I'll try the acetone, applied in a delicate way..just like when I repaired the tip of the lever!! Thanks for the idea. John
underground Posted March 14, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 14, 2010 No acetone! I would use nail polish remover!! It will easily remove super glue and won't damage your camera, unless you dump it all over the place.
250swb Posted March 14, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 14, 2010 Nail polish remover is acetone. Its simply a variation on the thinning agent for nail polish. Steve
underground Posted March 17, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 17, 2010 I didn't know that. I do know the acetone I have at work is really strong s**t. That must thin that quite a bit.
NZDavid Posted March 18, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 18, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) WD-40 or kerosene.
tobey bilek Posted March 18, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 18, 2010 A wee bit of heat from a hair dryer if acetone does not do the trick alone. Acetone is the proper solvent. Warm it some, then acetone on a cotton swab.
