andalus Posted March 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 8, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I wish Leica would craft a 35 mm film scanner. Why not? Because it would cannibalize sales of digi cams? Consider how great it would be for those still hanging on to their film M. The best of both worlds, except for the convenience of variable ISO picture taking with an M9. I know, they would have to come up with a scanner say between the Imacons and the latest Nikon Coolscans in terms of quality output. Say priced at around 4-5 thousand bucks. How great to have a scanner by Leica optimized for Leica film cameras! Would this not inspire sales of Leica M7s and MP ad infinitum? I think so. brian8121 Posted March 8, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 8, 2010 i'm confused. how can a scanner be optimized for a particular type of camera?
jaapv Posted March 8, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 8, 2010 That is easy - Red dot, 10.000 $, six months delivery delay..
NB23 Posted March 8, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 8, 2010 Leica could also rebadge some Tri-X film ala freestyle, therefore securing the film cameras production
Steve Ash Posted March 8, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 8, 2010 Yes, there is a niche left with Nikon skipping its coolscan series. Shame on you, Nikon. But as discussed in the last LUF meeting it won't be Leica to jump into this one. In my pov it is Kodak's or Fuji film's turn to do so. andybarton Posted March 8, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 8, 2010 Absolutely. They're the ones that may be wanting to drive forward film sales, not Leica.

Regards Steve What kind of executive power do the LUF meetings have? I think that it could be a good Leica move. After all, they used to market the very best enlargers. Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Olympus and the others never bothered.

NB23 Posted March 8, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 8, 2010 "Executive power"? I'm curious to know what a LUF meeting has to do with the Leica market and product line. How do the discussed matters in those meetings reflect Leica's decisions.

earleygallery Posted March 8, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 8, 2010 I guess the LUF meeting referred to is one of the events where Leica representatives have attended to answer questions, like last years meeting in Germany? There is a gap in the market for a quality dedicated scanner of the type that Nikon or Minolta were making but I agree it would be more likely to come from a film manufacturer or someone like Epson. Steve Ash Posted March 8, 2010 Share #13 Posted March 8, 2010 I actually raised the question myself at the LUF meeting and it was rejected by Stefan Daniel. Regards Steve

menos I M6 Posted March 9, 2010 Share #15 Posted March 9, 2010 Would be interesting, how many of todays new Leica film body buyers do indeed process and scan their film by themselves. These are the only customers, who drive Leica film body sales, opposed to the ones, who "just got" a cheap used Leica film body including me. It very likely is not feasible to develop and market a modern Leica film scanner these days (unfortunately).
jaapv Posted March 9, 2010 Share #16 Posted March 9, 2010 The problem is that a substantial number of Leica film body buyers nowadays don't use the camera at all, but collect it...
earleygallery Posted March 11, 2010 Share #17 Posted March 11, 2010 Amazingly, there are other film photographers out there who use any number of other brand cameras, such as Pentax, Canon, Rollei, Nikon, well too many too list. It is this combined market of film users who would be potential buyers of a viable, quality dedicated film scanner. I think it's only a matter of time before someone moves back into this market.
