erl Posted March 10, 2010 Share #41 Posted March 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) As the size and dpis of the images are fixed are there any recommendation regarding the sharpening paramters in capture one to be chosen for best quality? Regards Steve What I recommend is that you sharpen (or nor sharpen) to your usual preference. Then print the file yourself to see how it looks. It will be different from your screen display. That should give you a good working start/finish point.
Advertisement Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Hi erl, Take a look here The LUF book - the selected photographs. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Steve Ash Posted March 10, 2010 Share #42 Posted March 10, 2010 Thanks Erl, that you replied to my question. I followed your recommendation and will keep the settings as they are. I was just wondering as according to the capture one manual a higher level of sharpening should be applied for books and brochures which can lead to an oversharpened look on monitors. So I was afraid to ruin the image by oversharpening. Regards Steve
luigi bertolotti Posted March 10, 2010 Share #43 Posted March 10, 2010 WOW !! I gave a long look to the selected pics' website : the mean level is really EXCELLENT ! I think that a great step has been made over the "many eyes, one camera" that has been, anyway, a good start point... Complements to all the shooters, and thanks to the selection team. tyler Posted March 10, 2010 Share #44 Posted March 10, 2010 i just had a book published on Blurb. After looking at the photos in my book, I resubmitted my three photos that were selected for the Leica book--hope the updated ones made it OK--and didn't confuse the process. Blurb really tends to make darks even darker, so I corrected for this on the updated photos. tv
carylwithay Posted March 10, 2010 Share #45 Posted March 10, 2010 I agree Blurb makes photos darker. to compensate, I lightened them and made them a bit more contrasty for my second bok and they came out perfect. Caryl
andybarton Posted March 11, 2010 Share #46 Posted March 11, 2010 The book team have received the updated shots from Tyler ;-) They will, as a minimum, be soft proofing the book. If that is not sufficient, I will personally sponsor one or two physical copies, so that we get the very best from all the submissions.

richam Posted March 11, 2010 Share #48 Posted March 11, 2010 Can I please remind everyone who has the email that it's the HIGH RESOLUTION version of the photograph that is now required. Edit: So far (19:07 on 07/03/10) there have been two images sent through which are not of sufficient size to be printed at the quality needed for the book. Please check the instructions included within Steve's email to you very carefully so that we can make the book of the highest quality. Just wanted to verify: I'm making the assumption that it's not wise to upscale the images to meet the maximum size and resolution; therefore if the original is smaller it will be submitted at the original pixel size, whatever that may be. Again, bless the organizers for all this hard work.
kamilsukun Posted March 11, 2010 Share #49 Posted March 11, 2010 Excellent work. Thank you all involved.
stunsworth Posted March 11, 2010 Author Share #50 Posted March 11, 2010 Just wanted to verify: I'm making the assumption that it's not wise to upscale the images to meet the maximum size and resolution; therefore if the original is smaller it will be submitted at the original pixel size, whatever that may be. Any upscaling is the responsibility of the photographer, a little upscaling may not cause any problems, but it's the photographer's decision. If you want your photograph to print as a 7x5 rather than the maximum size then submit it at that size and that's how it will be printed. I'd imagine anyone submitting a very small photograph will be asked for confirmation that that's what they intended, especailly given that Mac Mail has a habit of downsizing emailed photographs unless you tell it to do otherwise. bill Posted March 11, 2010 Share #52 Posted March 11, 2010 Update: At time of writing, I have downloaded from our mailbox a total of 58 photos so far. A couple of the submissions have been requested to be resubmitted because they were on the small side, and in at least one case, darker than the image submitted for judging. Please keep them coming - it is important that we get through this phase as quickly as possible so that we can get on with the book production proper. Many thanks! ldhayden Posted March 13, 2010 Share #53 Posted March 13, 2010 I've submitted my selection and a bit humbled at prospect of being included with a stellar group of images. erl Posted March 13, 2010 Share #54 Posted March 13, 2010 Nothing wrong with feeling humble, but remember, enough of us thought highly enough of your image to select it. So you are truly up there!

leicadig3 Posted March 13, 2010 Share #57 Posted March 13, 2010 I have the same feelings that Larry and Rolfh. For me, it would have been sufficient to contribute to the cause through the donation, but I'm pleasantly surprised and very happy to be in the book. Thanks to everyone who have participated in this book, especially to the organizers, Steve and everyone else. Regards. Enrique. .
