stunsworth Posted December 15, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 15, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I used to live 5 minutes walk from this resto at the top of the Palais Royale. Never went in. I guess I could have afforded to occasionally, but since a coffee here is about 10 Euros I preferred to dine at the place next door to where I lived where a 3 course meal was 15 Euros - and I used to be given a free Kir when I walked in :-)

elansprint72 Posted December 17, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 17, 2006 Interesting angle, tint suits the subject. Looks like a hefty brace under the arch. Cheers, Pete

andybarton Posted December 17, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 17, 2006 The restaurant is over 200 years old and is where Napoleon used to dine avec Josephine. It has a fabulous ceiling - well worth the entry fee Relais & Châteaux - Le Grand Véfour

Bruno Frisch Posted December 21, 2006 Share #10 Posted December 21, 2006 The current chef of Vefour is Guy Martin, he use to "chef" in the Chateau De Divonne, in Divonne-les-Bains for a large number of years, this hotel is located on the lake of Geneva and is most certainly one of the best Hotels possibly in the whole world. Anyway I know Guy quite well from his time at at the chateau, his cooking is sublime, it's very surprising that a human being can produce and combine such miraculous tastes out of relative simple products/ingredients. His specialty are truffels which only he can turn into priceless gems (taste wise of course) When I'm in paris I always go to Vefour, preferably for lunch for this is a nice time of day to visit the place, it is a rather beautiful establishment with quite some history to look back upon. Quit surprised to see a photo pop up here on the leica forum :-)
stunsworth Posted December 22, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted December 22, 2006 Bruno, thanks for the information. I knew that the food had a good reputation, but I didn't realise it was that good. The nearest (physically) that I dined to here was in the street behind (rue Beaujolais?) in a resto called 'La Pallete' or 'Le Palet', which was very pleasant - may have changed since 2002. It's changed so much, I think it's closed down IIRC, you recommended this to us when we stayed next to the Palais a couple of years ago. We couldn't find it anywhere... Bruno Frisch Posted December 22, 2006 Share #13 Posted December 22, 2006 Bruno, thanks for the information. I knew that the food had a good reputation, but I didn't realise it was that good. The nearest (physically) that I dined to here was in the street behind (rue Beaujolais?) in a resto called 'La Pallete' or 'Le Palet', which was very pleasant - may have changed since 2002. Steve, the food is good, very good actually... but It's only "that good" if you immediateley disregard the price one has to pay for it. A gourmet meal for four including choice wines, napoleon brandies and the cuban cigar will cost one as much as a mint condition Leica M6TTL.... and if your taste of wine is a good one you can easily add summilux to go with it.... but personally I enjoy good food and vefour supplies exactly that sort of stuff, stuff you aren't able to get anywhere else, it has it's own character... and the bokeh of the place is very good to. And andy it's still there, I was there 4 weeks ago. It's on the Rue Beaujolais and in a little covered arcade sort of thing (the entrance that is) not to hard to find actually, but not really exposed either, it#s No. 17 and the telephone No. is +33 (0)1 42 96 56 27 .... Phone for a reservation and ask for the best table in the establishment, which you won't get, but you will get a pretty good one, actually they are all good, but the better tables are away from the "restaurant routes" Andy, it's still open, at least it was in september. stunsworth Posted December 22, 2006 Author Share #14 Posted December 22, 2006 Bruno thanks for th information. I think you and Andy are talking at cross purposes. Andy's refering to the small restaurant in the street behind, where as I think you are talking about the Vefour. I've seen the Vefour menu, so I know what you are talking about regarding price :-)
